*Note: Apologies for the late journal.  Wifi issues at St. Johns today!*

This past weekend, Joci and Melanie took a trip to Community Forklift, where they met with Mac and Jay and their dads to pick up new objects for our recent sound-making investigations.  They found a huge array of metal, plastic, and miscellaneous items for our class to explore.  Today in the studio, Willa, Hadley, Grace and Lucy took turns tinkering with these objects to find sounds and discuss them with the group.
Picture
Grace drags metal against the yellow tube, making a loud noise.
Melanie:  What does that sound remind you of?
GV:  Scraping the firewood.  Every time I make a fire, I have to scrape it.  Where the edges are, you have to scrape it off.
Picture
Hadley taps two pieces of metal together at the end of a tube, making a soft metallic sound.
Melanie:  What does that remind you of?
Hadley: Star.
Picture
Willa blows into a PVC pipe, while two other metal pieces she is holding bump together.
Willa: A trumpet.  I have another sound.  This reminds me of breaking piece of wood.
Picture
Hadley slides two long metal pieces together, ending in a loud clang each time.
Hadley:  Waves bumping into rocks and seashells.  Pssh! Pssh!
Melanie:  What about the “clang” at the end?
Hadley:  It’s a big bottle bumping into a giant seashell.
Picture
Grace has one long metal piece, and on it a metallic number 9 is connected, bouncing and sliding.
Grace: It reminds me of popcorn popping.  Because it sounds like - pop!  Pop!  Do you know what my mommy used to do?  She used to get popcorn and make some popcorn and shake it.
Picture
Lucy holds up the slinky and gently bounces it in the air, making a very, very quiet sound.
Lucy: A mouse squeaking.
Picture
Lucy hits two metal pieces together, making a louder metallic sound.
Lucy: Bells ringing... Christmas bells.

Willa has two tubes connected by a metal piece.  She blows into the top one.
Melanie:  What does the bottom tube do?
Willa:  A different type of sound.
Melanie:  Can you play both at once?
Willa:  No, I don’t have two mouths! (laughs)
Jen: Maybe you could make an instrument that two people can play at the same time.
Melanie:  A partner instrument.  A friend instrument.
Willa and Grace play the instrument together.
Willa: It’s actually a three people sound.
Lucy:  Yeah it’s a three people sound, cause look!
Willa:  No actually four! (They are counting the holes at the ends of the pipes) …. Five people can play it.

In dramatic play, Ellee dressed up in a glitter dress and  noticed the light reflected on the wall...

Ellee –  It looks like ice.  I saw the inside of ice on the Magic School Bus.  The ice moves around when the ice gets warmer.
Also in dramatic play today... who knew mermaids could play the bugle!

Lila – We are at the beach.  We’re mermaids!
Willa – We’re super heroes!
Lila – Me too!
Willa – (to Joci) We’re going in the ocean and YOU are in the ocean.
Lila – (to Joci) If you touch the water then you’re a mermaid.  And you’re a mermaid so you’re in the ocean.

Construction took place in the small stuff area today.  Cassius, Bruno and others used this as an opportunity to innovate, and make their structure like a castle.  Cassius showed us how to crawl inside!

Work still continues on our sound-making mobile/wind-chime.  Prater uses wire to attach natural objects and beads.
