Carl decided the new "painting challenge" for today - volcanoes and/or caves. Ellee was the first to meet the challenge painting a bird in a tree with a volcano. Hadley was intrigued. Instrument Pieces we worked on today... 1. From a drawing by Rose - A "blowing" instrument, specifically something that you blow into from behind. Rose said the blue dot in the middle shows where the sound comes out. We realized we needed something to blow into, and something circular to show the colorful concentric stripes. Rose put the following materials together (see below). It's almost like a hat! Next week we will paint the stripes on the silver piece. 2. From a drawing by Lucy - a "strumming" instrument. We decide to use a long blue fish paired with another piece of wood to make it thicker, easier to nail into. While we work, Carl holds it and begins strumming it like a guitar, so we get the electric guitar out as a reference. Alex uses fishing line to measure how long the strings of our strummer should be. We ask the original artist, Lucy, what color it should be - Orange, she says! We mixed yellow and red, and made that fish orange. Next week we will add rubber bands for strumming, and add "tuners".
We ended the day with a rousing game of soccer in the alley. Hadley mans the goal like a pro while Alex, Prater, and Carl take each other on.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
