Yesterday, our class was inspired by Carl's love for hockey to create an ice rink of our own. A large group of children arranged blocks in a rectangle, then had a conversation about who would be able to use the rink. There was discussion that the rink was too small.
Rose: If we’re right here and the boys do not look where they’re going, they might bump into you and then you would fall on the ground.
They also realized the teams were uneven.
Alex: Three against five is a lot. We will beat you every round. Let me do some math in the hallway, I’ll be right back. Melanie: How are we going to fit everyone on this ice rink? Prater: If there’s only three girls, then the boys can fit in more. Melanie: So less girls means that more boys can join? Grace: I want Lucy to join me. Willa: Then there can just be two girls. Mac: Maybe we make it even slippy-er. We can fit… How about three boys and three girls? (Many children agree) Prater: I will write it down. (she sits down with a pen and paper) Cassius: I figured out the problem! So… there’s four boys and three girls wants to play. Then we need one girl so it’s fair, so it’s four against four. Grace: Write me, Prater! Prater: ..."W".... Grace: She’s writing me! She’s writing me!
Alex, Willa and Grace discuss fairness in hockey teams while standing on the ice rink
Prater's list of hockey players: Prater, Willa, Grace, Bruno, Alex, Carl, and Rose are all listed
As all of this unfolded, Bruno and others made "gear" to wear during the hockey game, such as helmets and chest pads.
Alex: It just makes you protect you. It just helps you protect. Everybody needs one.
Six children came down to Blake Hall to play a game of hockey. First they discussed who would be on which team.
Mac: I’m the goalie. Carl: How can we make the goal? How bout the chairs can be the goals.
Carl signs his name on "team 2"
Mac positioned as a goalie, watching the game carefully
Alex: How 'bout the teams get to choose their own names. Cassius: We need a Christmassy name.
Team 1 (Cassius, Mac, and Alex) named themselves the Jingle Bells.
Team 2 (Carl, Grace, Prater) named themselves the Crystals.
