We brought the idea to the children and here are the results so far. Some were satisfied right away. Others needed more time or as Cate said "I need to take a break," or "I didn't get much sleep last night," said Lily. We'll finish up the remaining self portraits on Tuesday for our Wednesday, Valentine's Day card sharing. [Heart!]
Elena: That's not the shape of my face. ...I need brown. I need legs... Now I need arms. ...A purple bow. ...These are ears.
Will: I do a big head. I see green. I do one eye then 2 eyes...then the hair. ...Look at this! A 'W', but this looks like a good mouth. This is the line spot...cheeks...the top of the cheeks.
Lily: I need a mirror.
Vivienne: I'm going to add my scar.
Cate: My face isn't a oval.
Tegan: I love to draw. I'm going to do Soercha's (her lovey) self portrait.
Hugh: My face is round.
Abby: My hair is blonde. My nose is white.
Zarina: I need black hair.
Lily, Abby, and Hugh will work to finish their self-portraits on Tuesday along with James and Caleb who need to start!
All of the children gave so much of themselves to working enthusiastically and persistently on these self portraits in their own unique ways. By looking between mirror and paper, observing the details of their face as they see it, not getting discouraged, and making as many attempts as necessary to "get it right" for their own satisfaction of completion in expressing a sense of pride in their process and the outcome of their work.
