What a wonderful way to begin a day with a celebration! Maisie's birthday was last month on December 21, but because of the timing of winter break we celebrated her school birthday today. Maisie was so excited about her storybook that she requested this part of the celebration take place first. Now her book, Alice the Bunny, is hanging with the eight other books.
Happy Birthday Maisie!
Children Voice an Interest in Clay Bowls & Scoopers
As we all know, the children love their snack plates. They combine form and function and a robust learning experience. But what if we are eating cereal with milk with snack? We can't eat cereal and milk off our snack plates! The next obvious and natural thing to do was to ask the children if they wanted to have snack bowls as well as snack plates. "Yes!" Another situation arose where we the number of scoopers did not evenly correspond to the number of bowls filled with a snack food. Do we need more scoopers? This circumstance and respective question followed the snack bowl conversation and so the subsequent question was delivered to the children, "Could we make snack scoopers?" "Yes!" Maisie in particular wanted to tackle this project. The enthusiasm was unanimous and so yesterday we began to make snack bowls and snack scoopers (photos from yesterday pictured below).
And along with clay bowl making came "clay play" at the other of the two studio tables. There was ample joy! Here, too, the children began to invest more in the imaginary world as they worked in the tangible world of clay. As if the clay became like a kind of conduit for cognitively exploring realms of the fanciful and engaging in relational conversation around it. Caleb, James, and Will (and later Tommy briefly) were utilizing the clay in a way that transformed the clay into a canvas through which they could share and elaborate upon imaginary stories and engineering of machines that required water. This also provided an intentional ruse for the sensory joy of clay and water play. Here's to joy! Have a wonderful long weekend!
