Building a Door for the Rainey Room Shop

"I have an idea! We could build it out of our own blocks!
But first we have to measure ourselves!" Cate

"Yeah, so we can fit in the door!" Caleb

During our morning meeting this morning, the children suggested building a door for the Rainey Room shop. This idea conjured many different ideas, and as we sat together around the white table to draft plans, we considered what type of door it should be, what materials we should use to build it, and how we should actually go about constructing it. We will share the full conversation with you once it is transcribed, but for the meantime we will fast forward to the suggestion of measuring all the Rainey Room children to make sure that everyone can fit through the door!

First, Max set about making a list of the Rainey Room friends. He used everyone's symbols from the message center to make the complete list.

Next, we got measuring tapes and the children set about measuring each of their friends!

Family Traditions

Dana Shares her Embroidery Work

Last Thursday we were thrilled to have Vivienne's mom, Dana join us in the Rainey Room to share her special family tradition. Dana showed the children an embroidered pillow that was made specially for her by a nanny of hers when she was a little girl.
When her friends began to have children of their own she was inspired by her embroidered pillow and began to experiment and embroider pillows for the special children in her life. Dana showed us some pillows she made for Vivienne and her sister Eleanor as well as a book of different stitches from cultures around the world. We were so inspired by her work and the children were thrilled to experiment with some new techniques of their own!
Since then, the children have been very interested in embroidery and they have been drawing images on fabric to then trace over with the needle and thread. They really get the knack of it and it is quite spectacular how their work is so precise!

Mystery Reader

Yesterday we were joined by Vivienne's grandmother for a special Mystery Reader surprise! Vivienne had no idea that her grandmother was coming in and we just love a good surprise!! She read a great new book to the children that included a lot of Spanish vocabulary and thankfully all of our Spanish speaking friends in the Rainey Room were able to translate!
