Mystery Guest Presents: A Kindergarten Panel with former St. John's friends Prater (NPS), Ellee (St. Patricks), and Hadley (Maret)
The Tucker Room children were SO excited to welcome back Prater, Ellee, and Hadley as they are all eager to hear what kindergarten is all about!
We spoke to the children yesterday and gathered initial questions for the girls to consider:
Maisie- why at kindergarten do you have to pack your own lunch? Tegan - do you do homework in kindergarten? Elena- why is kindergarten so important? Hugh - I don’t know why this is but at st Patrick’s you have your own lunch, they have their own cafeteria, is this true? James - why do you do homework? Tommy - why does st. Patrick’s doesn’t have lockers? They have the same thing we have, they don’t have lockers Will - it’s kinda what James question.. why do you have to use computers while you do your homework? Why do you have to bring backpacks? Lily- what classes are you gonna be in? What are you gonna do? Cate - why don’t you have cubby bags?
We began a conversation at snack today to brainstorm ideas for what to do if we miss our St. John's friends once we go off to kindergarten:
Dagny: You can have a playdate! Tommy: If we miss each other we can go to the same school that’s the other person that you miss is going to. (you can visit the school of the person you miss) Will: Maybe that could be a question for the mystery guest. [kindergarten panel] Cate: I would say “Are you at different schools? And do you miss each other?” Lily: I'll be happy because me and Cate will see each other. I’m not gonna miss Cate because she’ll be in my same school! Cate: We can have playdates with all our friends from St. John’s! Maisie: You can have playdates and you can also, if you’re careful you can go to the park and see each other. Elena: I know! I know! Maybe this….maybe you can talk to each other on the phone for FaceTime, Facetime is the one that you talk to so you can see the person. Lily: You could play together, you can play video games together at your house if you can. If you’re allowed to . Tommy: If you miss each other then you can go where your friend is. Hugh: See if you can find [new] friends! What if one of the people you want to have a playdate with are not around? Maisie: When you miss your friend you can go to their house and play fun games and do lots of things Will: If you want a playdate with each other and you’re at somewhere before the playdate, and you look around everywhere, like at a park, and if you find a friend you wanna have a playdate with you can have a playdate at the park.
Kindergarten Panel Discussion:
Tommy: Wait you go to St. Patricks?! That’s where my sister goes! Hadley: At my school instead of cubby bags, we have backpacks Lily: Cate has backpack. she uses it at school Elena: What’s important about kindergarten? Hadley: You learn new things Prater: I think practicing stuff that you don’t know how to do Ellee: You learn new things Elena: What do you learn new things about? Prater: Today we learned that my friends thought something was made out of plastic and we just learned today that it’s made out of wood Hugh: we did an experience, we made a volcano because we’re making a movie with a volcano that erupts… Cate: Do you do experiments in kindergarten? Prater: Sometimes I do, it’s bc once I made wood. Hadley: Once we made sand out of coral, shells, and rocks - in a bottle by shaking them all together. Lily: What do you bring in your backpack? Hadley: Usually you don’t bring a lot of things, you bring a raincoat and a folder. Elena- That’s it? Tommy: What age do you need to be to go into kindergarten? Prater: Usually 5 or 6 but if you stay 2 years, like my friend at school he’s staying 2 years in pre-k, so he’s gonna be 7 Hadley: Some people in kindergarten are 7 not always 6. Allison: At snack today we were having this dicussion, maybe you can speak from your experience…What do you do when you miss your friends from St. John’s? Prater- What I did is, on the first day of kindergarten they introduced everybody’s names and then I made new friends by saying, “What’s your name ?” and then we played together and stuff like that. Hadley- In our school if you’re missing your friends…if you’re missing your friends, after school you could ask a parent, “Hey, can we plan a playdate? Because we kind’ve miss them” Prater- We also go to summer camp together…HERE! Elena: Why do you bring lunch to school? Hadley: There’s a salad bar [Prater and Ellee describe lunch at their schools] Cate: Do you bring lovey’s to school? [The girls shake their heads No] Tommy: What do you do at your schools? Hadley: Well, usually there’s a schedule on a white board that we have at our school and then there’s a morning message hanging up and then there’s something called “Question of the Day.” You get some free time and then they ring a bell and then we start Morning Meeting. Prater: I kind’ve do the same thing as Hadley, “Do you like Star Wars?” was the Question of the Day, and I did “Yes” and lots of my other friends said “No”. Ellee: Mine is the same as Hadley and the Question of the Day today was, “Do you like chocolate pops?” [Do you deliver messages to your friends in Kindergarten?] Hadley: There’s mailboxes and on Tuesday is like a free day, so at the beginning of the day, you can do whatever you want after you do the other things, so you could draw a picture for someone else and put it in their mailbox. They are made out of wood and the name is at the bottom Prater: At my school we don’t have mailboxes, you can put it in their locker Tommy: What do you eat at your school? Hadley: At the beginning of the day. Basically I had Morning Meeting and then Word Study then sometimes we have snack and recess at the same time so when we’re outside we get boxes of pita crackers and wheat crackers. And if the box is empty, there’s a little bag inside and they give the whole bag to the person to eat the rest. Hugh: What’s your favorite thing about your school? Prater: I really like Art Hadley: I really like that we don’t have homework Ellee: I like that we have Art Elena: What’s your favorite part about school? Hadley- That we have Technology class. And in technology class we get to use iPads. Elena: What’s technology? Hadley: At my school it’s when our Technology teacher comes in and he gives us iPads and we’ve been working on. Prater- Choice Time is my favorite and today I made one of these bracelets, and that’s my favorite thing to do Elle- I like centers, there’s cards on our morning message that say what center were going to.
