"This is a thing I brought from home and it’s a book.
Dagny: This is a thing I brought from home and it’s a book. I can read it too.
Hugh: With only one page?
Dagny: No, two pages. I made it myself
James: that doesn't look like a normal book, but…
Dagny: cause I made it myself
James: Yes, but books usually have three staples or four
Dagny: This is actually taped together
James: That’s funny
James: it’s funny that it’s taped right?
Hugh: Yeah, it’s funny because most books are sewn.
Abby: You don’t really even put it together with tape. I don't know how to put things together with tape
Want me to read it guys? -Dagny
Melanie: Can you maybe show it to us first and then read it so we know what it looks like?
[Dagny shows the pages to the friends while they raise their hands with questions]
Abby: What does it say?
Will: She has to read it
Dagny: I'm going to read it.
“Once there's a apple who did a ace. Then a boy came along and made friends with the apple and then a cat came along and made friends with the apple too. and then a dog came along and smashed the apple and the egg too. And then the dog…” - Dagny
“Once there was a hat who went into ice. And then a girl came jogging by and the hat saw the girl. And then, a dog came by and, he, um, kicked the girl. And then the girl grabbed a mop and swung it at the dog. And then, and then she took a nap. And then after she took her nap, the dog grabbed oreos and smashed her window." - Dagny
I don't know how to read books but I know what it's about so I just read a little. I just don’t really know about it. And then like, I just really that not really good lately but I read it still. - Abby
Tegan: How did you make it?
Dagny: I just made it with paper and tape and me and mom wrote the letters on it
Hugh: I have one...well that book’s good for like, when it's late, when it's like late at night and you're like really tired
Dagny: um no. You could read it anytime of the day
Hugh: well sometimes if it's really late that's a good book to read because it's not very long and most books you can't make two pages
Maisie: When did you make it?
Dagny: I made it...I don’t remember
Maisie: Well, why did you pick to bring that in?
Dagny: Um, because I wanted to.
Melanie: Why is it special to you Dagny?
Dagny: Because it’s a book….Tommy [calls on him to ask a question]
Tommy: Did you ask your mom how to spell the letters and you writed the letters?
Dagny: You don’t spell letters
Melanie: You mean write the letters and spell the words?
Dagny: Yeah. Mommy just told me, we did the whole alphabet and then we, um, did all of the stuff [points to the page]
Melanie: What stuff?
Dagny: Like all of this...all of the words that we did on this page.
Elena: did you make it today or tomorrow?
Dagny: I didn’t make it any of those days
Abby: When did you make it?
Dagny: I don’t remember
Will: Did you know where that paper was or did you just found it?
Dagny: We...mommy just got it for me and then we started it
Tommy: Well some books have a hundred papers
Elena: and some have a million
Caleb: It would take years to make a million!
Abby: I know a book that’s 55 pages
James: where did you make it when you were in the house?
Dagny: in mommy’s office
Allison: I was wondering, when you wrote this story, did you have any inspiration?
Allison: you thought of all the ideas for the book all by yourself?
Dagny: well, mommy figured out some and I figured out some
Melanie: I want to ask you a question that we asked all the other friends. Is it breakable or fragile?
Dagny: It’s breakable
Lily: because of the tape?
Tegan: no, because of the paper can rip
Maisie: if you pull it so hard?
Hugh: if you rip the tape off?
Hugh: if you like, really pull it? see?
Tommy: and if it gives you [mon] then you can rip it very easily
Melanie: Maybe this is an obvious question. It’s a two part question. What is it made of or what did you use to make it?
Dagny: It’s made of paper
Melanie: And what did you use to make all that, what did you use to write?
James: or pencil?
Dagny: no, pen
Allison: Was there anything else you were thinking about bringing in?
Allison: You knew right away that your special book was what you were going to bring in?
Allison: Is there a title for the book? Does the book have a name?
Hugh: I have a name for it!
Lily: the crash out book?
Caleb: why did you not put tape all over this?
Dagny: Because then you wouldn’t be able to turn all the pages.
Caleb: No there [points to the page]
Allison: at the top?
Dagny: I just didn’t. Because then if you opened it, it would be like all this tape...
Hugh: I have a really good [idea]...you should make the title, “Doggy and the Apple and Dog”
Caleb: oh i know a good title for it, “Apple Smash” because the dog smashed the apple
Why is it special to you?
