Maisie Shares her Treasure Box

Picture

"I put
all my
treasures in it!"

- Maisie

Maisie: My mom...when my grandma...when my mom's Grandma, not my grandma, when my mom's grandma...when my mom gave this box to my grandma, my mom's grandma died, so my mom gave it to me and I put all my treasures in it. I got this one at...where did I get this one? oh! One of my friends came over and she had like this big box with beads and she said I could keep it. I also have this one, it’s from the same place.
Allison: Do you wanna lay them out in the meadow so everyone can see?
Hugh: I think that's about a Sandbox one...
Maise: which one? like which kind?
James: It was one of those pink ones kind’ve
Maisie: oh, Where did you put it?
Caleb: Back to where we found it
James: So tomorrow, we’ll try to do for..if we find it I’ll brush it off and I'll wash it off.
Cate: Give it to me if you wanted
James: I’ll give it to you
Tegan: can I have one? cuz I don't have one...
Elena: I don’t have one either

Do you wanna lay them out in the meadow so everyone can see?

Maisie: oh i thought that was paper but it’s really cardboard!

Caleb: paper and cardboard are the same thing
James: It was kinda like that thing but not quite that shape [the treasure they found in the sandbox]
Hugh: yeah not quite the shape
James: half of it…

Hugh asks, "Where did you
get that
box?"

"how did
your grandma get up here to
give it to
you?"

Hugh: Where did you get that box?
Maisie: oh, my mom gave it to me
Hugh: but how?
Maisie: She said I could take it in. My mom said maybe I should take my piggy bank. Maybe I wanted to, because maybe if we found money we would keep it instead of putting it in the piggy bank. Or like someone maybe if they found out how to open it, someone wouldn’t know it was mine and then they would just take the money from inside of it
Allison: Hugh, were you wondering where the box came from originally?
Hugh: yeah, I have more thoughts...Maisie how did your grandma get up here to give it to you, your mom's grandma?
Maisie:  My mom's grandma, when my grandma died, my mom's grandma gave it back, so that's how I got it.
Hugh: How did she get up from where she lives to here?
Lily: cause she died, so how did she get up?
Hugh: no, your moms grandma
Maisie: I guess she took a airplane, I never actually told my mom that, so I actually have no idea…
Caleb: What if she took a boat?
Lily: or she took a car!
Caleb: or she took a submarine!
Maisie: Definitely not...
Cate: Definitely not a submarine!
Hugh: or a train! She could’ve taken a train!
Maisie: I would say she took an airplane
Cate: I would say she took an airplane too
Abby: Maybe when she got off the airplane she had a wheelchair to wheel herself to your house a little bit?
Calerb: no, she would take probably a rental car, she takes a rental car, she doesn’t walk, she took a rental car
James: I’ve taken lots of rental cars. One time I did not take a rental car, I took a rental truck! It was really cool, it was really fancy
Caleb: one time I had a treasure I found at the beach and I left it in the rental car!
James: are you sure about that?
Caleb: yeah…

Maisie: When I was at my mom's at church, I found these and she said I could keep them. So I put them in here. I like I try to organize them with the pink and one section and the blue and the other but there's only two pockets and three different colors silver white pink and blue and a little lavender because this is a kind of lavender

Dagny asks,  "Maisie, is it breakable?"

Picture
Maisie: No, it's wood
James: wood is breakable, if you could throw it super hard and it’s fragile
Hugh: Yeah if you throw that would it will break
Maisie: but you shouldn't throw it, it's my mom's
Hugh: yeah
James: yeah
Maisie: And then she’d get really mad at me because she wanted me to take care of it, nooot break it. I would get it if someone took my toy and broke...if I let someone borrow my toy and then I came back and it was broken, how would you feel if that happened?
Will: I was angry
Tegan: I would also feel sad if someone broke mine
Maisie: like what if someone tore Saoirse into two, that would be really sad. because you sleep with Saoirse
Tegan: yeah, she’s my lovie even. I would not like that at all
Elena: And then you can’t get a new one
Hugh: Yes you can, I saw a lot of lovies at stores. All my lovies are dumb...
Lily: My next door neighbor..his name is Tyler..has a really dumb, dumb lovie
Caleb: I would be really sad, but we could try to superglue it, but the problem with the superglue is…
Maisie: It would glue us together!
[children laugh]
Caleb: The problem is, the bottle lid is glued onto it and we broke it trying to get it off
[children laugh]
Hugh: I have an idea...
Caleb: so we would have to try to use hot glue, but it's really bumpy….but the hot glue would be bumpy, like bump, bump, bump...
Maisie: I would say instead of bumpy, I’d say it’s hot because it’s called hot glue
Caleb: Because if you touch it while it's wet, guess what? you'll get a burned on your finger
Maisie: Or I would probably say, you would glue your finger! or instead, you would actually get glue on your finger and then you touch something with your finger, and it would get stuck to your finger!
[children laugh]
Caleb: You're stronger than hot glue and stuff so you could probably pull it off. I also can pull off hot glue from pieces of paper

James offers, "wood is
breakable, if
you could
throw it
super hard
and it’s
fragile"

"if I let
someone borrow
my toy and
then I came
back and it
was broken,
how would
you feel if
that happened?"
Maisie

Melanie: What makes this special to you?
Maisie: It isn't special to me
Melanie: It isn’t?
Maisie: nope, because it's my moms
Melanie: What makes it special to her? Why is it special to your mom?
Maisie: because her grandma gave it to her
Melanie: Oh yeah you said that in the beginning

James asks, "Where did you find these pieces of necklaces?"

Maisie: oh, I know what I did! I think these were first necklaces but then I cut them into pieces when I was little. so that's they’re a little rag, I had a silver, a blue, and a pink

James: Two blues!
Cate: And two silvers!
Maisie: No, I didn't have two silvers, they were both together but I cut them apart.
Elena: Why?
Maisie: I don't know, I was just little and I wanted to make them into fancy decorations. I guess, I just cut them...oh, I remember what I was doing!!! I was pretending it was a party and I was pretending to be Amelia Bedelia and she does everything crazy so I pretended to cut these like crazy. Because someone said something, and then she said “put out the necklaces” and I thought you meant “like pull them apart” and she really meant put them on the house to make a decoration!!! I used to have like 5 of those, I only have 3 now...yeah

"I was pretending it was a party and I was pretending to be Amelia Bedelia and she does everything crazy so I pretended to cut these like crazy!"

Allison asks, "I’m wondering, why did you choose
to bring these special items in?
 "

Picture
Maisie: which bit? the beads or the box?
Allison: both
Maisie: I didn't really decide to bring the beads in, the beads are just in the Box. I didn't really decide. But the reason why I brought the box is because my mom wanted me to bring it in, I didn't really get to decide what I wanted to bring in, she’s like, “you could bring this in!”...
Allison: was there anything else you were thinking of bringing in?
Maisie: I was thinking about bringing...nope, I didn't really think about bringing anything in because I had no idea what I could even do for my time
Allison: If you could bring in anything you wanted, what would you bring in?
Maisie: I would bring in….oh! I know what I would bring that...I absolutely know that I would bring it...I would bring in my best friend necklace! You get it!
Hugh: or Finley?
Maisie: no, definitely not Finley! He would be all...lazy bones  [giggles]
Melanie: I don't think he can sit on the shelf all year...
Maisie: he would fall off the shelf and break his head open!

Elena: They [the box] have cards on them!

Melanie: Nice observation Elena
Maisie: Because of the card box, but now it's a treasure box. It's supposed to be cards in each section. Remember when the picnic table, the mushroom table, was covered in these little sparkles? I picked them up and put them in my box. I used to have a little glass box to put all my treasures in, but when it got like….there's only like this much room in it, so I have to put them down in this one.

Melanie asks, "what is it made of? and how old is it?"

Picture
Hugh: 100 years old?
[children guess numbers]
Will: That’s a great question!
Maisie: Nope not a hundred! This is made out of wood. And I would say they just smooth the wood, it feels really smooth. and they card cards of it [laughs] carved cards! Not cards, cards!
Melanie: where do you think the wood came from?
Melanie: I guess it came from the trees. And then when they took it, they like took this knife and then they like smoothed it. And I would guess it's like 10 years old
Melanie: Do you know what kind of tree it came from? like what kind of wood?
Maisie: I would guess it would be from a maple?
James: maple, yes
Caleb: but why would it be red?
James: Redwood then?
Maisie: Because look, it’s a little red!
Melanie: It’s not all red, maybe it’s painted or stained?
Caleb: The whole thing is really dark red
James: There’s kind’ve different reds, like maroon is a dark red.
