Today, Lisa continued the work with the birthday committee and Toniann & Kate took the rest of the group out for a field trip to the construction site. The construction site director cut a hole in the mesh to allow us to see into the area from the street and to show us the track excavator and how it works. The excavator was moving rocks and we had a front row view. We watched it for a while; the gears were grinding, the arm swinging around to and from the pile, and articulating back and forward with loud beeps and the fierce roar of the engine in the background. After observing right at the site the children walked back to St. John's grounds and sat near the front steps to draw some observations. Then they were excited to get back to class to tell about the adventure.
Upon returning the children started an investigation into trains again. The projector was on and it was projecting a blue color. Will asked for a moving train. Will and Elle drew the locomotive driving down the tracks and noticed their shadows on a part of the wall. Will called out, "That's me!" Elle was standing right by him. They stopped and stood still to see their shadows. Will pointed to Elle's shadow and said, "That's you." Kian and Rowan continued work in the sandbox, sharing vehicles and moving the sand.
