Tucker Room

What a day...

Today was a a busy day in the Brown Room. Several friends worked on the light tables. Kian built a tower on one light table, counting out the blocks as he placed them and using blocks and transparent colored theater gels to make a beautifully decorated structure. Other children used black, white, colored, and transparent objects on the other light table to explore shape and color. Over the past two days, we've begun to experiment with overlapping transparent colored objects to make new colors. Elle explained today to her friends, "I'm making all of the colors. Look, I changed green; and now I'm gonna change all of them." Austin joined her in mixing colors and also observing negative space and how shapes could be used to fill them.
Just before snack, we noticed something interesting outside our window. There was a police car with flashing lights across the street. Toniann had seen a fire truck nearby on her way to school, and we wondered if these emergency vehicles were related.

Toniann: Why are the trucks there? And why are their lights on?
Austin: A fire.

Sam: When there’s a fire the fire trucks come and an ambulance. And one fire truck comes to the fire and one ambulance comes to the fire.
Kate: Does a police car come to the fire?
Sam: No.
Austin: When a car goes too fast, the police give you a ticket and they say stop. And a tow truck.

We watched and wondered for a bit, noticing the different vehicles outside and watching the people out in the street talking. We learned later that the street was closed because of the ice. We think this may explain the activity we saw outside.
After snack, Sam, Kian and Rowan set up a tea party in the studio. Other friends decided to join--including Grace, who had the novel idea of using a window block as a pair of sunglasses. At first, Louise wasn't sure this was a good idea, but eventually she decided that it was alright to use this material in a different and unexpected way.
We ended our day with a quiet story time. We'd had a busy morning and were ready to relax and enjoy some cozy time together. It was a great day.
