We started sewing!
This week we engaged with a new area in our classroom - our sewing corner. A larger documentation board above highlights the parent's work from our virtual parent meeting in January and the materials we will be working with during our introduction to sewing, such as fabric, thread or embroidery floss, embroidery hoops ("sewing hoops" - Remy) and needles. The children also recognized their own or friends' symbols that parents had embroidered onto pieces of fabric.
Children explored threading needles and how to sew different materials onto their hoops. Pushing the blunt needles through the fabric requires precision, fine motor skills, and strength. By repeatedly sewing the needle back and forth through the fabric they attached other items, such as beads or pieces of fabric, to their designs. We learned how to start a project (by securing the thread with a knot at the end) and how to end a stitch. For that we have to slide the needle under an existing stitch and pull it through to create a loop with the thread. Remember, to not pull it tight just then! We then have to pass the needle through the loop and pull the needle tight to close the loop and make a knot. To finish it up we use scissors to cut the thread off right above the knot.
Morning Meeting with Saul
We enjoyed the exchange of ideas and interests with Saul and are looking forward to seeing him again soon.
Saul, thank you for joining us this morning!
