Happy Halloween! Spooky lunches... Our final week of October table setting and spooky decorations is here! Monday will begin a new month of table setting and some change in our table setting decorations. We will continue to use our clay pumpkins, but what else? "What will we use now that Halloween is over?" -Lily We took on the left over pumpkins and gourds from the book fair and integrated them into our October table setting decorations, and will hold onto them for as long as they last into the month of November. The spooky decorations have kind of taken back seat since their placement in the book fair haunted house and the introduction of the pumpkins. Have a delightful Halloween weekend!

The children have been counting the days until Halloween. It's almost Halloween, we are so excited! Cozy housesThe children are so excited to play small world (cozy house) again, and building small cozy world, and cozy houses. We asked the children what 's a cozy house? Theo - A cozy house looks like it's cozy, it looks like a gingerbread house
Drawing Monsters Every day the option and opportunity to draw is available in CW. The children have drawn ghosts, pumpkins and spiders for the haunted house (which will proudly be on display at the Book Fair). The haunted house work has been a primary CW focus this month and it continues to hold the children's genuine enthusiasm and investment. Here, Lily, Elizabeth, and Betsy gave their focus and sustained attention to drawing the CW finger puppet monsters with great detail. Have a Happy Saturday at the SJ BOOK FAIR!Many children (Max in particular) have been very curious and interested in the "fruit" growing in the outdoor classroom tree. "And they're going to turn orange? Why? When are they going to be orange?" are a few questions that Max was asking Brigitte and Melanie. Then a serendipitous moment arrived this week when a ripe and squirrel nibbled persimmon spontaneously fell from the branch. We had to investigate it. Max now saw the orange color he had been anticipating! "It's a meeting about rats. We're having a meeting about rats." -Gus The cozy "Not Haunted" houses! *Gus has been building the same "cute and cozy" house for the past couple of day Brigitte - Gus, why did you decide to make a cozy house next to the haunted house? Gus - Because I found this box, and I wanted to make a house with it. Chipmunk lives in this house. When chipmunk goes out to walk his dog he loves to see the haunted house. He loves to peek inside the haunted house. Brigitte - Why chipmunk does not want to live in the haunted house? Gus - Because the ghosts are already living in there. You know Brigitte, you have to pay lots of money for a house, and chipmunk doesn't have enough roommates. His job is to work upstair at his computer. And you need a lot of people to live in a big house. Henry - (Who is also building a small house next to Gus Says) - My bunny rabbit doesn't want to live in the haunted house because it's scary. He wants to live in a cozy house where he feels safe. Gus - I need to add ropes to the big haunted house, in case people want to escape The spooky neighborhood is expanding.... Susan, Maeve and Dru built a new Halloween neighborhood not too far from the haunted house Book Fair The children were so excited and delighted to go see their Haunted house on the spooky books table. We went to set up the house and read some books. The children were also excited to see the houses they made at home on display We are so excited for the book fair on Saturday and we hope to see there!
The children are really beginning to get into the swing of things with table setting and exercising more independence. A Walk Toward Witches... Have a bewitching weekend!Betsy drew, colored, and cut out a couple of pumpkins to decorate our haunted house for Halloween Tommy also drew, colored, and cut out a pumpkin and placed it on the Haunted House. "Spooky" Gus was so excited to reveal his "cute" (as he called it) cozy, secret, small world he had created adjacent to the haunted house And Lily enjoying a new hair do!
Henry and Maeve gave thoughtful investment to the materials and their placement. Maeve added three mirrors to each table to give balance to the table setting and Henry considered his options for what next to add to the arrangement. Table setting pride and glee! Sander relishing in the placemats begins to decorate the table with them, and why not? Dru plays with stability in stacking. Tommy and Gus enjoy a playful exchange each other and the materials as they work together to embellish the table. Satisfies with their work, Lily and Elizabeth happily sit down at their spot at the table after calling friends over to join them. Clay Days!CW is also clay workshop! We have been playing and working with clay to build foundational clay vocabulary and skills such as pinching, pressing, rolling, and coiling. As we've been expressing these functions it has been with the intention to form Halloween and fall inspired objects like spiders, apples, pumpkins and ghosts. The clay work once fired can be integrated into table setting and small world play, which for now is, thematically and enthusiastically, haunted houses! Have a restful, reflective, and playful weekend!Gus - It's a haunted grocery store where you can buy moldy food. It's a haunted grocery store for ghosts Theo - We need to add lights and webs Lily - (working on a mandala) How about if we add a mandala to the haunted grocery store because the mandalas are spooky Gus - This (skeleton) can be the grocery store person! Theo - Do you know why it's so beautiful? It's because it's a grocery store birthday party! Jake - It's haunted Sander - I am looking for the small world furnitures, I want to play small world, where are the furnitures and tiny pieces? It's a Haunted Grocery Store with a Garage and a Garden! Before building, yet another Haunted House with a garage and a garden, Jake went to retrieve a book from our CW book bag and exclaimed - " We have to make a haunted house like this!" Gus - We are making a haunted garage Theo - Brigitte, turn off the light, we need to put the candles in the haunted house Betsy - Look Brigitte, I made an arrangement with lights and finger monsters Henry worked very carefully on building a ramp to the haunted house Lights and Shadows in the haunted houseDru and Maeve loved to be behind the curtain and in front of the mirror surrounded by beautiful sparkling lights Is it Mandala time? (Lily, Betsy, Elizabeth, and Dru)After lunch, we have been offering mandalas as a transition, and it became one of our favorite activity in CW. The children love to gather around the table to talk while working on their "matching" mandalas OutdoorDismissalPart of our CW end of the day routine is to gather on the rug and sing some of our favorite songs. Then Brigitte sings "Stirring our Brew" and turns the children into quiet little creatures such as mice as we exit the Tucker room. Lately, we have added a new song to our repertoire, Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate, and the children have asked me to turn them into rolling little pumpkins, hence the pictures bellow 😀
