Happy Birthday, Brigitte!

On Thursday, the KW bakers got busy and prepared shortcake for Brigitte's birthday treat!  The children knew we were making strawberry shortcake, and were surprised we didn't have the strawberries yesterday!
"The most important part of strawberry shortcake is strawberries!"
                                                                                                   Frances
Luckily the strawberries and whipped cream were added today!

Message Making!

Children continued to use the sewing machine to make messages for the incoming children...

Some of the messages made this week!

Today Seon and Cate printed welcoming messages.  Seon sang as she worked:
"Welcome, welcome to St. John's!  It's the nicest school in the world!'
"Everything at St. John's is a dream!"

The Rest of our Week

Having fun in the outdoor classroom, small world scenarios, Illustrating books, making messages, and light table explorations filled out the rest of our week!  Today, Brigitte's daughter Eva assisted in the message center.

Storytelling

Last week,  we asked children what makes a good story?  Not surprisingly, we had answers about the character Pikachu, a good idea (or story line), and action.  Throughout the process, children have formulated their own theories about the question, "How can I create an engaging story for my friends?"  As we worked yesterday,  another important element to storytelling came to our attention: humor.
Picture

Finlay has listened to the stories of several of his friends.  On Tuesday, he was ready to dictate and illustrate his own book.  In the story, two characters follow a treasure map and discover (spoiler alert) a PIZZA!
Finlay - I think this is the part where everyone will laugh.  I think you (Jill) might have a laughing attack, like you did when you read Cate's book.

Frannie also continued to work on her illustrations yesterday.  As she was considering various materials, she found a piece of shiny, gold cardstock.  True to the fancy Frannie aesthetic, she decided it would be perfect for the back cover of her book.
Picture

Sometimes getting started can be the hardest part of any project.  Lucas has been very interested in creating a book, but wasn't sure what to write about.  Today he dictated a story about his lovie, Puppy. He started his illustrations and can't wait to keep going!

Messages for Incoming Children

Throughout the week, we will be working on messages for incoming children.  This is an opportunity to show new (or returning) families some of the ways we work with materials.  Many of the KW-created messages will feature hand sewing or machine sewing.

Some reflections:
Cate - I did hand sewing.
Wilder - I did sewing with the machine: purple, red, yellow.  I did big triangles and little triangles.
Hugh - Wilder's looked like a heartbeat!  (Like an EKG reading!)

KW Name Change:
The Journey Continues

Last Friday, we shared conversations about the new name for KW.    We noticed that Jade indicated that the ideas of Rainey Room children were important as they would be the senior members of our afternoon program.  With this in mind, we asked Jade to assist with a small group of Rainey Room children.
Jade -We should ask the Rainey Room what they think.  So, guys, what do you want to call KW?
Ford - Harry Potter KW for baby goats.
Jade - I don't think the (current) Brown Room children would like that.  I don't think Adaline or Cully would like those things.
Ford - I have one... it's a little bit funny at the end.  K. E. P. C.  Boom.  (Ford lists letters, because he understands that we use initials when we say "KW.")
Ellie - Eating Lunch and Going to Bed.  Or  Eating Lunch and Playing (as possible names).
     Mimi - Ring Workshop.
Jill - Some of these names are a little silly. Why are you choosing silly names?
Mimi - Because we like silly names!

We brought small groups to the documentation to remind us of all the possibilities we had previously suggested.  children clearly remembered the fun choices, such as Louisa's "Strawberry Pineapple Smiley Face."
Cal - I like Stinky Workshop.   I like Pikachu Workshop.
Bailee - I like Puppy Workshop.
Seon - I'm thinking.... Workshop Kids.  (Seon plays with the current name by reversing the words!)

One constant has been the word "Workshop."  Perhaps we can use this base to build a new name:
Hugh - What about AW?  (Referring to Afternoon workshop)
Ford - We already said "AW" (for Afternoon Workshop). But people will get confused and just say "KW."  (Because the names sound so similar.
Hugh - I think they will get it right.
     Ellie - I like Children's Workshop.
Ford - Why do we need a new name for KW anyway?
Jill - Because we really don't use the word "Kids" at this school.
Cate - Would people really think are baby goats?
We may be getting closer to a new name.  We'll keep you posted!

Bookmaking and a Guest Reader!

Children have not exhausted their enthusiasm or ideas for story creation.  Some children have three books in the works!  Today was extra-specials Molly spent time reading these books.
Picture
After Molly read, the group reflected on some of the stories.
Saul - It was funny when Pikuchu was stuck in the chimney. (In Cate's book)
Hugh - Cate's book and my book both have a cave and Pikuchu.
Brigitte - What are some things you need for a good book?
Finlay - The way to make a good book is to have a good brain and good ideas.
    Cate - And Pikachu.
    Finlay - And action.

This and that....

This week has been full of outdoor fun, light table environments, using our small muscles to string the tiniest beads. and small world.
Enjoy these images and have a wonderful weekend!

Outdoor Classroom Day!

Today, we spent most of our time outside to allow the visiting educators to spend time with the wonderful work and teachers in the Tucker Room.

We Planted Marigolds in the Flower Box...

We Brought Ice to the Sandbox...

Saul - (Stacking the pieces of ice) We're making pancakes, with sprinkles (sand)!
Remy - The pancakes are ready!
Saul - When you put the ice in water, it gets shiny again.
Jade - Would you like to come to the glass store? (Indicating that the ice get more clear as it melts.)
Mimi - I'm going to watch the ice melt.
Picture
Jade demonstrates the ice that had turned to "glass."

Indoor/Outdoor Experiences

This week, we worked on our books and a weaving both inside and outside.  While reflecting on the book writing and illustrating the books:
Jade - When I drawed the pictures (for her book), it looked real.  It was coming to life in my book and my brain.

Indoor Small Worlds

The children's interest in small WORLDS continued, both at the round table and at the light table.
Mimi and Louisa wanted a selection of animals at the light table.  They specifically requested horses, dinosaurs and unicorns.  The addition of these animals led to building homes and forming families.
Louisa - I built this house.  I helped Zari build her house, too.
Zari - There's  so many children! We need some babysitters for all these children.

Later, a storm came along and destroyed the houses that Ford and Louisa were using.  The photo on the right show the devastation after the storm!

Our Week

Picture
Spring is in the air!  Bright colors and flowers can be found in our weavings and our message materials.  We will continue to work on the KW name change with a goal of making a decision in the next few weeks.  At this point, children begun to write and illustrate over 20 books.  This work will continue and we will have a special guest reader on Friday afternoon to read ALL of them!

KW  Conversations

Before spring break, we had a morning meeting with families about the KW name change.  At the end of our meeting, families were able to submit name suggestions.   This week, we presented the suggestions and asked the children for their responses.
Many of the Tucker Room children were interested in the name “Pickachu Workshop.”
Lily: I know most of us like Pikachu but it doesn’t really have to do with KW.
Hugh: Well, if Pikachu has the most,  it wins the vote, then I guess we are calling it that.
Jade: Well, also, I don’t think we shouldn’t call it Pikachu because I remember you said Cate and everybody else who loves Pikachu is not going to be here next year. Why would it be called Pikachu Workshop or Pikachu Playgroup?  It would be basically a Pokemon Workshop.
Lily: If you want it to be Pikachu Workshop, it would be call ….PW.
Hugh: PW is not that bad of a name.
Jade: Also the kids like Rainey Room kids might not really be into Pikachu. And Brown Room children are going to be here next year and I haven’t even seen them like Pikachu.
     Wilder: Ford likes Pikachu.
Jill: Maybe Ford likes Pikachu. These are all excellent points. I have one more question: Funny workshop or play workshop sounds good, but is KW always funny or always play?
    Cate: About Work Workshop?
    Wilder: Or Lunch Workshop?
    Caper: What about Afternoon workshop?
Lucas: I am definitely voting for my idea which is not that.
Jill: Do you remember what yours was?
     Lucas: Play Workshop.
     Seon: I like Afternoon Workshop.
Michael - I have a name.  Small House.
Picture
Picture
On Friday, the conversation continued:
Jade - Maybe we should talk to the Rainey Room because they will be the children in KW next year.
Ellie - I like Pineapple Strawberry (referring to a name that Louisa has suggested before).
    Mimi - Beach Workshop.
Ford - (Referring to a paper that says "Food,"  which looks a lot like "Ford") Food Workshop or Healthy Food Workshop.
    Finlay - Lunch Play.
Jade - Because that's basically what we do.
Finlay - What about Team Dream?
Hugh - What about Fun Squad?
    Jade - Or Lunch Squad.
Cal - How about Stinky Workshop.  I love Stinky Workshop!

Through group discussions, we have been able to eliminate a few of the names.  However, we may have added some new possibilities!  We were impressed by the children's thoughtfulness and the consideration shown for the future KW participants.  There's obviously more work to come and we will keep you posted on the process.

 A Bunch of Books!

Children continued their work on books. Bailee started her first book and Zari worked on her illustrations.  Ellie and Cape started  their second books.  Next week, we will have a guest reader (or two) come in for special story times featuring these masterpieces!

Large and Small Weavings

The children have completed one of their collaborative weavings.  Today they started some individual weaving before we take on another large-scale group effort next week!
Outdoor play, the light table, Zingo, and Small World were other highlights of our week.  Enjoy these images and have a wonderful weekend!

Small Moments

While on our Reggio study tour, we often observed documentation and presentations that focused on small stories.  Sometimes, these examples featured only two or three children.  When we zero in  like this, we notice several things.  To name just a few:
  • the relationships that children have with one another,
  • the relationships children have with materials,
  • the connections that children make between their previous knowledge and a new experience,
  • collaboration and problem solving,
  • the possibility of trying something new or making a discovery
Here's some examples of things we saw yesterday and today.

Small Moments Outside

The rocking boat was turned on its side, and made an excellent home or hiding place.
Jade - Do you want to have an Africa house?  (Here Jade is remembering houses she saw n her recent trip to Africa and working to build one.)
Saul - I think you need some big blocks, like this. (Noticing some problems with stability, he brings over larger hollow blocks) I think you

With assistance from a teacher, Ford practiced grabbing and jumping onto the rope swing.  When he finished, he coached Ellie on the process.  He even pushed her once she was on the swing.

Small World Moments and New Ideas

Picture
Cate's creatures hosted a game night!
Small world is very popular and has been offered every day for months.  In spite of this, children often develop new ideas to include in their play.
Picture
There has been plenty of "cooking" in small world. Yesterday was the first day that the idea of a restaurant emerged.
Picture
Cal included a beach (sandpaper) and the ocean (blue fabric) in his scenario.

Watercolors: Sharing Expertise

Today and yesterday, Wilder was eager to return to cherry blossom watercolors.  He remembered that he'd previously used small dots to represent the blossoms.  As they watched him carefully painting, many friends implemented the same technique.  Cate, Seon, Mimi, Ellie, Hugh, Capers, and Finlay all incorporated dots into their work.

Problem Solving in Book Illustration

Hugh has been diligently working on his 11 page book for over a week.  Today, as he was illustrating one of the final pages, he realized that his drawing didn't really reflect the words on that page.
Hugh - I made a mistake on this drawing. I'm going to add one thing to the story so that it makes sense with this drawing; so  it's not like I made a mistake.
Picture

This and that....

  • We are enjoying the beautiful weather during our outside time.
  • Children have been creating various homes with materials at the light table.
  • Zingo!  Children remembered how much they loved group games.
  • Children started the first of two planned collaborative weavings.

Holidays in Small World

In the fall, small world celebrated Halloween.  Since November, Christmas has been popular in small world.  On Thursday, the Christmas sting ray was still distributing presents.  Then, the available materials presented another possibility.
Finlay - It's Easter!  We're having chocolate bears!
Picture

Another Celebration...

On Thursday, we prepared chocolate cake!!
Cooking projects are a highlight in the KW program.  In addition to being fun and delicious, children work on measuring ,  counting, and following directions in order or sequencing.
Luke - I mixed and I poured the sugar.
Lucas - I liked the whole thing.  I like to get my hands dirty (sometimes that happens when we grease the pan).
Finlay - I'm really happy that I'm cooking for Cate's birthday committee (connecting this experience to Tucker Room work).
Cate - I'm having mac and cheese bites (for her birthday).
Of course, we enjoyed eating the cake, too!

We ended the day with a fun dance party!
Thank you to the families who provided SO MANY beautiful flowers and to the children who wrote lovely messages!

This and that...

  • Children continued to write and illustrate books.  We have read a few of them in class... ask your child about the stories!
  • Spring eggs were featured on the light table all week.
  • Small world and watercolors filled out our week.

Have a wonderful weekend!  We'll see you Tuesday!
