"I put this (tape) on (the nose) so it would be stronger when it hits the ground." - Nora Hello everyone. What a frightful Friday it is! But that never stops KW from our amazing work. As many of you know, we have been constructing paper airplanes. This week, we have been testing different designs, adding passengers and changing elevation levels. A Deeper Dive into Measuring Distance ![]() We noticed that different friends took different sized steps when they measured how far their paper airplanes flew. For example, C.C. took small steps when measuring the flight of her plane but Jack took much larger steps. The steps were not a uniform unit of measurement. To more accurately measure the distance of our paper airplanes, we went to Blake Hall and measure with a tape measure in inches and threw from the same location. Each friend had 3 tries to see how far their plane went. Inbetween throws, KW children were encouraged to see what modifications they could make such as adding passengers or fixing creases that had come undone. After each throw, our friends practiced using a tape measure to measure the distance "I got 90!" - Jack Tiles for a new Mosaic Portait DrawingsGeorge independently draws a halloween drawing and Elle draws a haunted house HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

How to Fold a Paper AirplaneAfter extensive practice, our friends in KW would like to teach everyone reading how to make their own paper airplanes. We had so much fun making and throwing them that would like to share our knowledge with you. But now that we've made them, how do they fly? Are there ways we can make the planes fly further? What changes or improvements can we make? Tomorrow we will test our planes and measure how far they fly!
"I'm going to fly over the whole school!" Lily
Some children worked silently, while others narrated their work. Cape - Let's see, what do I need the most. All tiny things. A red leaf. The light doesn't shine through the wood (small wood buttons). Cate joins and starts using small materials like Cape did. Cape - I think the design is goo that Cate is making. Cate - (Using yellow buttons). Yellow is my favorite color. Look at this orangey color. (As she layers other tissue pieces) An orange pinky color! Bea - These (gold balls) look cool in the rings. This has 100 eyes. Lily - Mine is kind of like outside. It has flowers and hula hoops. Lucas - (Referring to some of the layering) I have some things hiding under there. Fall Colors, ContinuedChildren worked with pastels today, primarily exploring the ways pastels blend and create new shades. Here's some of the things they noticed as they worked. Bea - It mises together. Finlay - It becomes invisible! Bea - it becomes like silver. Wilder - Look, it's disappearing! Bea - Can I show you what happens? (Bea comes to Lily and demonstrates what happens.). The colors don't disappear, they mix together. Jordan - What happens if you add more color? Lily - It adds more layers. Bea - I can make new colors!
You'll hear a lot more about friendship during Rainey Room's Classroom Stories presentation tomorrow night!A Look at our Week!Today we will take the Rainey Room children on the neighborhood walk to see the Halloween decorations and to play at Volta Park. We will also return to paper airplanes, which was almost as much fun as walking to Volta Park. Fall is in the air, and our classroom work will feature leaves and other natural elements. We can't wait to get started!
Welcome Marley and Violet & Welcome Back, Sylvie! This week we welcomed two Tucker Room friends to KW! Marley attended both yesterday and today, while Violet joined us this afternoon. Both girls had a chance to set the table for the first time. As she was setting the table, Violet noticed a bird on George's place card and said, "I guess Georgie likes birdies like I do." this illustrated the way in which the place cards created by families supports connections between the children. We also welcomed back Sylvie, who we had missed during her trip to California. Paper Airplanes
Creating an Underwater World
Using our New PaintsRecently, the Rainey KW children mixed some new paints. Several children used them today: Violet - I was making shells and seeds. And these (indicating some dots on her paper) are the bubbles. My picture is beautiful. Reed - This is a sunset. C.C. - (After painting waves). Now I'm going to do sea animals. (She eventually included a sting ray, reflecting her earlier experience at the light table.) A little of everything else from today...We had not planned on opening the message center, but, once again, it was back by popular demand. Children also played games and worked on a large floor puzzle. During these processes, we saw a great deal of collaboration and building off of each other's ideas. Thursday's Neighborhood Walk
Have a wonderful weekend! We look forward to seeing you at the preview party and the book fair!We are KW!Many thanks to all the families that sent in their photo collages! We have a complete set and we wanted to share them with you. Looking at these collages will support our discussions about similarities and differences and identity. Some questions that we might consider as we reflect on our families:
There's so many great books at the book fair! Many of them are stories about families. Here's just a few that you might like. We are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night and Saturday!
Look Who's Coming to Lunch This week is full of surprises! Sam and Ines were kind enough to join us for lunch this week. Thank you so much for stopping by. It was such a treat. While they were there, we got to ask Sam more questions about what she likes for her upcoming birthday. Cape, Jade and Wilder already had some ideas: Sam's Birthday Comittee Jade: She likes blue, she likes sparkles too! Cape: What do you think her favorite animal is? Jade: Well we can’t ask her because it’s special. Wilder: Maybe an elephant. Cape: Maybe a tiger! Jade: Maybe a lion! Jen: Do you know if Sam has any animals? Jade: She has a dog. She told me she likes cats, that’s her favorite animal. Wilder: Her house? Cape: Unicorns. Jade: We can also ask the birthday child or the birthday teacher what their favorite animal is. Jade: She likes drawing. (they go ask Sam) Sam: Corgies and deer. Sam's Dog, Winston the Corgi
Let's paint him! - Bea It's kind of a little bit hard because my hand is in the way (of the projection). Now it's harder because I'm in the shadow. - Bea We need white, brown, green and pink. I need to look at it (the picture). We need to make some and and we need to make some white for his paws,. Sam's Favorite Color: Sparkly Blue The children have always found working with the shadow screen and the overhead projector to be an engaging experience. We thought that we could create a projection that would serve as the background for Sam’s birthday portrait. Knowing that she likes blue and sparkly things we got to work. Cate and Frannie also created a blue and sparkly arrangement on the light table that could be projected to be Sam’s birthday portrait background. Light Projector Explorations After our birthday committee work was done, children enjoyed using the projector with a variety of transparencies. Lucas - (Using a transparency that had some skull images in the design) It kind of looks like Halloween. Jade - It has Halloween things on it. Frannie - It does look like Halloween. Lucas changes the angle of the mirror on the projector and the image is now seen on the ceiling. Lucas - It flew up there. Cate - (Looking through the transparencies) Let’s try the mushrooms like Lucas’ symbol. Frannie - (Adding another transparency on top). Let’s try the flowers. They notice that the projection is dark and crowded. Cate - Maybe we should start with the flowers. (She removes the other layers and places the flowers on the projector, now the flowers can be clearly seen.) Colors Remix I'm going to mix paints because I know it will be fun - Lucas
How does that Rainbow Keep Escaping? - Wilder Wilder: The rainbows are flying around the room. Let's try to catch them! Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, it was a beautiful sunny day. Perfect for catching rainbows. Finlay and Wilder experimented and built with large blocks to continue trying to capture the elusive rainbows. They used a combination and architecture and shadow to try to capture their rainbows. This is how the rainbows get in. And then it goes 'SNAP!' - Wilder
It's Book Fair Week!Throughout the school everyone is getting excited about the book fair. KW will be checking out the set-up later this week as well as collecting sticks and twigs for the book-binding experience offered during the book fair. Last week, the Rainey children developed the background and props for the birthday portrait of Ines. This week, we will work on Sam's birthday portrait. Sam and Ines are also having lunch with KW today, so we hope to gather a few more ideas that can be included in this portrait! We're looking forward to s fun week! Once again, thanks to the families that participated in the Gallery Walk last Friday. We enjoyed sharing the children's work with you. If you haven't already, you can see a LOT of photos from this event in Friday's blog.
Clay Stories
Exploring the Magnetic Chalkboard
Children were very enthusiastic about returning to this experience today. The children explored how the angles of the ramps affected speed and direction. Visibility also became a factor as children realized they couldn't always see a ball as it passed through an opaque tunnel. C.C. - We need the ramps. But where will it land? Can we use a harder ball? Elle - Can we have a tunnel? C.C. Let's try a short tunnel. Maxon works on a new ramp. C.C. - Good idea, Maxon. You have such good ideas. The children make a new system that uses only ramps and not tunnels. Lochie - (Adjusting the angle of the ramp.) We have to do it like this so it's fast. C.C. - (Skipping two of the ramps) When we do it this way, it goes all the way, but when we start at the top it goes this way. Jack - (Placing a tube at a sharp angle). It goes here and all the way down and gets caught so it doesn't go too fast to see. Nora - Oh, this is neat! I'm sending a ball down! Jack - No, wait. I'm still testing it!
