It was a beautiful day for a Friday Field Trip!   When we were collecting water from the canal, Max noted that the water of the Potomac looked cleaner than the canal.  Jay had a decidedly different opinion today, saying, "The Potomac is so dirty.  It has gravel and sand and dirt and people, sharks and sea monsters.  Snapping turtles."  We decided to put this to the test and went for a walk to the waterfront.  When walking anywhere, we notice how children respond to the environment.  Last year, each time we crossed the bridge over the canal, children climbed up the brick columns.... repeatedly.  Today the response was the same.  We required time for running and climbing before reaching the waterfront.

As we crossed over the canal, we noticed the ducks that lived in the canal.  Once at the waterfront, we first made our way around the ducks to collect water samples.  When our work was done, we spent time feeding the ducks.  Here's some of the children's thoughts about the process:
Grace - (Before collecting water) I hope they have clean water because that's the best.
Jill - Does this (collected Potomac water) look cleaner than the canal water?
    Elle - Yeah.
Hadley - The water looks clear.
Grace - It looks a little dirty, but you can't see anything in it. (Indicating that unlike the canal water, you can see anything floating in this water.)
Hadley - I was putting out the food and the big mama duck chomped it out of my hand, but it didn't hurt.
(We were more careful to toss the food after that!)
Jay - The ducks were eating and they got so full.

After feeding the ducks, we made our way to "the maze" to run and play freeze tag before heading up the hill to school.  Enjoy the slide show and have a great weekend!
