Art Journal Work

tsBefore lunch today, children reflected on their book art work.  Here's a little bit of the conversation:
Hugh - What's an art journal?
Will - I think it's a field trip where you see art?  (Perhaps he was thinking of an art journey!)
Caleb - It's a journal that you put art in.
Cate - Or it could be a book where you put your art in it.
The children knew what they were talking about!  After lunch, they got right to work in their art journals.  Many children worked with paint, but there was also drawing, "writing," and collage.  Sam started his art journal today, and Dagny gave him some helpful guidance, "See, Sam, I glued three pages together and I painted on here,  It's my first page."  As children painted their pages, they were happy to have hair dryers available to help with the drying process.  Maisie also enjoyed fluffing up the pages of her book with the dryer.  The children's enthusiasm was clear and their books are practically bursting with colors and textures.

Working with Wood: Opportunities for Problem Solving

Picture
Last week, Tommy started building a house, when he encountered a problem.  As he said, "I was trying to nail in the wall.  The nails wouldn't go in.  Hugh Tried and Lily tired , but they wouldn't go in."  to work on this problem, we brought in someone who frequently works with wood, Jill's husband Gary.  With the help, of power tool, Gary and Tommy worked through the obstacle.  Tommy explained that Gary had to drill four holes, and then Tommy was able to pound in the remaining nails.  Gary also worked with Tommy to adjust his boy position and grip on the hammer to get more force in striking the nails.   Hugh and some friends learned about the level.  Using this tools, Hugh discovered that part of his double-layer bridge is level, while another is not.  Cate and Elena also started thinking about the kinds of structures they will eventually build.  Cate is interested in building a house and Elena want to work on a garage.

Everything Else....

On our last afternoon together, children enjoyed playing outside in the beautiful sunshine.  We worked on a "thank you" book for the Lantern Book Store and children painted at the easel.  Elena, no surprise, painted a picture of her family.  Enjoy these images and have a wonderful Spring Break!
