It was a day full of drawing in KW.  The first drawing experience involved self-portrait work.  Children were nervous that it might be difficult to draw themselves, but we gave them a head start,  They were presented with half of their school photo and then added the other half.  Children noticed and included a lot of details in their work.  We will be working on other portraits throughout the week.

Our other drawing experience was part of a drawing and construction challenge.  Before building, children had to draw what they intended to build.  Most children made upright structures, but
Tegan and Dagny focused on making flat geometric structures.  Lou Lou chose to work cooperatively with Sam and Joslin to construct their ideas.  It isn't easy to take a two-dimensional drawing and translate it to a three-dimensional building, but several children took on the challenge.  Elena said the she felt like an engineer as she executed her ideas.

Journal Work

Joslin join KW last week and didn't have an art journal.   That situation was remedied today, as she was presented with one at our meeting.  Although she participated in the two drawing experiences, she was also eager to start filling her pages with work.   She began with writing her name and using marker on some of the first pages.  She then turned to collage and completed a few pages by gluing interesting papers.   After working on one collage, she decided to glue interesting papers in the shape  of letters on some of her other pages.
Caleb, Elena, and Cate had the opportunity to reflect on their art journals during journal meetings today.  They primarily thought about their feelings associated with the work and possible titles for their books.   We gain insight listening to children in these small groups, often learning about their thinking behind their creations.   We look forward to more revelations in the days to come!
