Look Who's Coming to Lunch

This week is full of surprises! Sam and Ines were kind enough to join us for lunch this week. Thank you so much for stopping by. It was such a treat. While they were there, we got to ask Sam more questions about what she likes for her upcoming birthday. Cape, Jade and Wilder already had some ideas:

Sam's Birthday Comittee
Jade: She likes blue, she likes sparkles too! 
Cape: What do you think her favorite animal is?
Jade: Well we can’t ask her because it’s special.
Wilder: Maybe an elephant.
Cape: Maybe a tiger! 
Jade: Maybe a lion!
Jen: Do you know if Sam has any animals?
Jade: She has a dog. She told me she likes cats, that’s her favorite animal.
Wilder: Her house?
Cape: Unicorns.
Jade: We can also ask the birthday child or the birthday teacher what their favorite animal is. 
Jade: She likes drawing.
(they go ask Sam)
Sam: Corgies and deer.

KW decided to split into two group to cover the things we thought Sam likes the most, her dog and blue sparkles. The first ground focused on the her Corgi. We used pictures Sam send to us so that we knew what he dog looks like.

Lily: I want to try to draw him
Bea: Me too.

Lily uses the picture as a reference while Bea draws a dog from her imagination.

Lily: I chose this color because it's the closest to white. White doesn't show up on the paper.
Bea: Look, I made dogs for Sam

It's kind of a little bit hard because my hand is in the way (of the projection). Now it's harder because I'm in the shadow. - Bea

We need white, brown, green and pink. I need to look at it (the picture). We need to make some and and we need to make some white for his paws,.

Sam's Favorite Color: Sparkly Blue

The children have always found working with the shadow screen and the overhead projector to be an engaging experience.  We thought that we could create a projection that would serve as the background for Sam’s birthday portrait.  Knowing that she likes blue and sparkly things we got to work.  Cate and Frannie also created a blue and sparkly arrangement on the light table that could be projected to be Sam’s birthday portrait background.

Light Projector Explorations
After our birthday committee work was done, children enjoyed using the projector with a variety of transparencies.

Lucas - I’m watching it like a movie.
Cape - These two butterflies are getting closer.  They’re friends.

Lucas - (Using a transparency that had some skull images in the design)  It kind of looks like Halloween.
Jade - It has Halloween things on it.
Frannie - It does look like Halloween.

Lucas changes the angle of the mirror on the projector and the image is now seen on the ceiling.
Lucas - It flew up there.

Cate - (Looking through the transparencies) Let’s try the mushrooms like Lucas’ symbol.
Frannie - (Adding another transparency on top). Let’s try the flowers.
They notice that the projection is dark and crowded.
Cate - Maybe we should start with the flowers.  (She removes the other layers and places the flowers on the projector, now the flowers can be clearly seen.)

Colors Remix

I'm going to mix paints because I know it will be fun - Lucas

Capers: My dad has a boat and it's this color blue. Have you seen my color? It's getting darker. It looks like coffee.

Jade: Look at mine. It's turning green
Cate: Mine is already pink.

How does that Rainbow Keep Escaping? - Wilder

Wilder: The rainbows are flying around the room. Let's try to catch them!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, it was a beautiful sunny day. Perfect for catching rainbows. Finlay and Wilder experimented and built with large blocks to continue trying to capture the elusive rainbows. They used a combination and architecture and shadow to try to capture their rainbows. 

​Finlay: Look! The rainbow is in the trap. 
Wilder: Let's catch another one.
Finlay: (Whispering) Let's get it...

Finlay: How did it get out?
Wilder: Maybe it knows a way to get out.
