Paint Workshop: Bubble Printing!
Book Art and BuildingAfter bubble printing, the children moved on to work in their art books. Then Sam, Tommy, Lily, and Hugh worked on building inspired by a photo of the Capitol Building we projected onto the shadow screen. Here's some of what they said while working: Sam - "My idea is to build a tall building! Lily - "Let's get building." Hugh - "There's going to be people in the town." Lily - "Don't you think we need that statue?" (Pointing to the statue in the photo.) Lily - (Exploring various materials to build a stature with a duck) "A duck statue." Hugh - (With wood human figures,) "These can be human statues." Tommy - (With other wood figures,) "These can be grown-ups." Sam - "I'm working. I'm using this (piece of foam) as cement." (Holding up a diamond-shaped block) "Do we need a diamond in the city?" Hugh - "I guess so, sure!" The children used a lot of negotiation and problem-solving as they worked and as they figured out how to place their structures in order to cause shadows to appear on the screen. Meanwhile, Will continued to work in his book. He asked for help with the writing. He wrote, "LC YOU CANNOT READ THIS BOOK." As he wrote he said, "Everyone is building except me. That's great because I need privacy (to work in his secret book.)" He explained, "I wrote 'LC' for my sister because I can't spell her name." Fairy FamilyOutside, the Fairy Family was at it again preparing cake for the teenage son's (Tommy) birthday and Grandfather (Will) was distracting hime while Mom (Lily) and Dad (Hugh) were preparing for the party. The children made beds using large wooden blocks and set up areas of the outdoor classroom as the rooms in their house. The children also spent some time watching Victor work on rebuilding our wooden boat.

"This is the most fun!" LouiseRodarte-Inspired Dress DesignYou have probably noticed the fabulous dresses that are on display on the top of the Tucker Room cubbies. We offered the same experience today, so different children could try their hand at design. Hugh, Lily, and Maisie manipulated the available materials to create fun and fantastic outfits for the drawing models. Louise and Grace added some accessories to the designs they had previously created. Working in small groups at the large table, children engaged in collaboration and problem solving. Children helped each other with the wire cutters and other tools. Children used a variety of strategies to make paper, fur, fabric and other materials stay in place. Feel free to ask your child how he or she overcame the challenges presented by this experience. Outdoor FunThe KW crew has well-established relationships and they are great at working and playing together. While outside, we often notice pretend play scenarios are being developed. While dramatic play is fun, there are benefits to this kind of interaction as well. Just for starters, pretend play encourages imagination and creativity, support social and emotional development, fosters language and communication skills, and helps develop critical thinking, negotiation, and problem solving abilities. Today's scenario included a fairy family involved in meal preparation. Here's some of the dialogue:
Lily - Fairy Father, can you call the plumber? The sink is broken. Hugh - Yup. Tommy - Can I be the brother? Lily - Yes, I'm the fairy mother. Tommy - Where did you put that dish? Hugh - I put it in the oven. Lily - We need ...... kind of music. Hugh, let's get playing. Hugh - Soup is ready! Lily - Cupcakes for later! Tommy - There's three seats. There's three people. Of course, it's also fun to swing, climb, and play in the sand box while outside! The week has gone by so quickly! We're looking forward to Friday fun! Mixing PaintsWe had two workshops going today. The first was mixing our own paint colors to use in our ongoing painting workshop. All of the children had a turn at mixing paints. Caleb and Elena even began painting with the colors they had mixed! Here's some of what the children said while mixing the colors:
Book ArtIn our other workshop, children had the opportunity to work with mixed media in the books they've made. Grace, Louise, and Lou Lou chose to work in this area for quite some time before eventually mixing some paint colors. Each child used a different approach and media in their work. Grace worked with markers and paint sticks, blocking out colors on the page. She then experimented with the paint sticks on various mulberry papers, quickly discovering that she could make different marks with those painted papers, as if printing on the page. Louise, who created abstract art with the paint sticks in her book, layering all of the colors, decided to glue some of Grace's painted mulberry paper scraps on top of her painting. Lou Lou worked with permanent markers and washi tape in her book. She then stitched together a second book to take home. Both Grace and Lou Lou also glued in photos of their fashion designs from last week. Being TogetherHere are some other highlights of the children enjoying being together at the start and end of our time together today: "It feels like summer!" Cate
February is here! Here's a look at what lies ahead for Kids' Workshop. We will continue our work with Rodarte-related experiences and book making. Our next planned "workshop" is painting. We have already recognized the children love watercolors. We will move ahead with various types of paints, various surfaces, and various tools. Tomorrow we start with mixing new paint colors to be used throughout the week!
