Making the Clay Guardian Monster

Picture
Bea uses a picture of a Chimera from the Greek mythology book to help her make a clay guardian.
Picture
The small group examines their original sketches
The small group for the clay guardian started by looking at their previous work and deciding what the best aspects of the drawings were.

(Looking at Cate’s) Thats the coolest one - Capers
I want to make one like Cate’s. We need to have it break fire - Bea
I agree - Capers
(Looking at the mythology book) This is too scary. If people see if, they’ll go’ahhhhhh’ and run away and won’t know its not real. - Bea

The small group looked through their work and picked out specific drawings. Each of the chosen drawings had aspects of the clay guardian that they wanted to incorporate into the final product. Cate's guardian was very popular but she was not in school to explain certain parts of it. After deciding on the aspects of the guardian, we used paint markers and clay slip to paint to create new ideas. Some friends chose to use books or toys as inspiration as well.

We are having a problem. We don’t know what this is (points to Cate’s drawing) - Bea
This would be easier if I knew whose it was. - Lily
(The group thinks about how to make a head for the guardian)
I know! we can use the head from my picture - Bea
It could have the head of a rhino - Lily
I have an idea. It could have 2 heads. One is a rhino and one is a lizard - Lily
It has ears, don’t forget - Bea
Did you say it needed a snake tail? - Lily
Yea, I drew 2 - Bea
I drew one - Lily

Our Clay Guardian Has:
2 heads, one is a rhino and one is a lizard - Lily
5 (snake) tails - Bea
6 tentacles. It's like an octopus - Capers
It breathes fire, but it's fake - Bea
Picture
Lily's work has several striped tails on the sides and tentacles on the bottom
Picture
Wilder drew a head for the guardian based of Medusa
Picture
Bea focused on the rhino and alligator heads as well as one large striped tail

Franny thought the guardian should be colorful and used a picture of Cerberus as inspiration

Creating in a Different Medium

Picture
Lily used the alligator as a model for her clay work as she experiments with the clay. "How can we make an alligator head for the guardian."
Wednesday, we took our ideas and inspiration with us as we brought in a new element, clay. We experimented with clay, thinking about the different aspects of that clay guardian. How can we represent the guardian given the clay techniques we know?

"We can use this to practice. We can make a rhino head." - Bea
"Or a snake tail." - Lily

Picture
"Rhinos have curved back horns." - Bea
"Like a thin unicorn" - Lily

Luke comes up with a different idea. He creates a snake using a series of sphere's that he rolls by hand.
"You make it with your hand. I fold it over and then  I roll it around"
Luke notices Lily and Capers using a studded rolling pin as "scales" and uses it to make "scales" for his snake.
"See, I made a long snakes. He's so long. He has scales on top"

Our Message Guardian Grows

Picture
Jade and Remy work together to wrap markers with wire to make the legs for their guardian
Legs for the Message Guardian
The committee for the message guardian got back together today to work on the legs.  Before spring break, they had decided that old markers would serve as the legs.  Children and teachers had collected a set of dried-up markers.  The group quickly determined that placing our large guardian on two thin markers would not work.
Picture
Jade - We could put markers together and tape them or tie them (to form the legs).
The first task was to equally divide the legs.  Lucas and Wilder worked together while Jade and Remy formed the other group.  They all took markers and counted the number that was in each set.  Initially, Wilder and Lucas had 11 markers while Jade and Remy had 7.  The boys passed a few markers to the girls.  Now the girls’ set contained 10, while the boys had 8.
Wilder - Maybe you should share some of your markers.
Jade - We will.
On Wednesday, we put our work together.  The group started by looking at the legs they wrapped yesterday.  The initial plan was to balance these legs on glue bottle feet.  However, Jade noticed two boxes….
Jade - I have a good idea, we can put these legs in these boxes.  That will help them stand up.

Picture
Later on, the group moved to the head and how to make its other features.
Jade - We still need a mouth and a nose and ears.  And a mouth with scary teeth.
The group considers the tray of materials….
Jade - I have a good idea.  We can draw the mouth with the teeth.
The group likes the idea and begins their drawings.
Jade - It’s okay if we all draw because he can have a lot of scary mouths.

Welcome Back!

It's been great to reconnect with the children again!  This week, we will work on our guardians.  The work on the message guardian, the portfolio guardian, the shiny things guardian, and the guardian for humans will continue.  The guardian for clay that has been glazed and fired will begin to move beyond the drawing stage.  Once again, work with varied materials, collaboration, and problem solving with be key components of our work.  We can't wait to get started!

"Those are beautiful materials."                  Frannie

Work on the fairy-like guardian for humans continued on Tuesday with Brigitte.  Frannie and her friends were happy to work on wings and a skirt for this lovely guardian.  As children began with the wings, there was some debate on which material to use on them.  Lily wanted shimmery silver, while Remy preferred a translucent material that created shiny rainbows.  They eventually decided they could use both.
Lily - One was for the night time wing and one is for day time.
Remy - The night doesn't have any clear on it; it doesn't have rainbows.
Lily - the silver is the night wing and the clear is the day wing.

Next up was the skirt.  Frannie and Lily selected  material and cut it.
Lily - I helped make the skirt.  So we got some wire and put the fabric on it, over and over again.  And then it was done.
Remy - We sewed the wire in out, in out, in out.  It made ruffles.
    Brigitte - That's big skirt!
    Remy - Because it's a big fairy!
Later Lucas came over and sewed additional flower embellishments on the skirt.

The Message Guardian

Children started by examining the work that has been done on the body of the guardian.
Frannie - He looks like “Clink.” (Frannie is referring to a book we have read about a robot named “Clink.”)
Jade - I know what his name should be, “Goldfish.”
Cate - Maybe his name should be “Messages.”
Cape - (Noticing a dot of hot glue in the center of the body). That looks like his belly button
Jill - So today, we can either work on the head or the legs.
    Several children - The head!
Jill - You have selected this box for the head.  Last week, we were trying to decide if the head should be blue or yellow?
    Cate - Can we vote?
    Jill - Sure.
Children unanimously vote for blue.  They begin to think about the eyes.
Wilder - Maybe buttons for the eyes.
Jill - Can you think about why the eyes would be important for a guardian?
Finlay - Because if a bad guy comes in and he (guardian) doesn’t have eyes, the bad guys would think it was just a decoration and keep walking.
Cape - So he can see the bad guys coming.
Jade - So he can see the really bad bad guys.
The children work on the eyes, choosing “O” stickers with google eyes in the middle.
Jade - Those eyes are pretty scary.
Lucas - it will stop the bad guys by eating them and the scissors (arms) will be fore hurting them.

Jill - I remember in Finlay’s drawing, the guardian had antennae.
    Finlay - Yes!  Antennae!
The group decides that old marker caps would be the perfect antennae.  After reviewing all the marker cap possibilities, they begin gluing them on to the top of the head.

Field Trip and Reflection

With such wonderful weather, we thought we would take a trip to see the transformers and reflect on our work thus far. Unbeknownst to the children, a third transformer has appeared. This one, which many friends think looks like Batman, sits on the roof greeting onlookers. It took some time, but we finally discovered him.
Picture
Finlay: He looks like Batman
Jill: You think because of the ears?
Wilder: Yea!
Picture
Wilder: They have lots of sharp things on their bodies. There's lots of silver.
Picture
Jade: There's a key on the bottom. That's where you put the fuel in so they can move.
Picture
Cate: Look inside! There's another transformer inside (the house).
After rediscovering the transformers and our love for all things robotic, we headed over the the nearby park to enjoy the afternoon. Lily and Capers taught us a new game, "Stuck in the Mud." It works like "Freeze Tag." Other friends decided to draw the beautiful spring greenery. We came back to St. Johns tired but excited to Spring Break. Don't forget, Thursday and Friday are Spring Conference. KW friends, we will see  you March 28. Have a great break!

A Quick Look at a Short KW Week!

Picture
This week, we only have two days of KW before conferences.  Of course, we will be focused on our guardians.  Today, we will make decisions and work a little more on our Message Guardian and the fairy-like Guardian for the humans.  We can't wait to see where our ideas take us today.  Tomorrow we will take advantage of the beautiful weather and get another look at the Transformer statues in Georgetown.  We've heard that there is a new transformer on the roof of the home!  We look forward to checking it out!

Many thanks to the families who have already signed up for a conference.  Since we are offering in-person conferences, you will be able to check out the guardian documentation that is prominent in the hallway.  As you can see, the children are already noticing the display of the their work and eagerly explaining the process to their friends and teachers.

"I am having so much fun!"                             Marley

Beginning to Build the Guardian for Shiny Things

We often refer to the famous Loris Malaguzzi phrase, "nothing without joy."  In our recent conversations with Amelia Gambetti, she has pointed out that this phrase implies that the joy comes with effort.  In other words, it's not only about having fun and being joyful, it is about the joy that comes from trying new things, solving some problems, collaborating with others, etc.  (NOTE:  Amelia Gambetti is a lifelong educator with the Reggio Amelia schools.  We are fortunate that she has collaborated with our school for over 10 years.). Last week, children thought about the guardian for shiny things, and drew their ideas.  This week, the work and pleasure of construction could begin.
Marley explores the materials and makes a pile of what she thinks will be the most useful.
Marley: These (gems) could be for the outline. I'll add them to the pile.
Marley collects shiny papers and examines it
    C.C.: Definitely these,  Marley
   Marley: Definitely
Jack: You can't just use little stuff. Then you can't build big.
The group finds cardboard boxes but they are not shiny.
Jordan: Have you tried the tin foil. You can bend and move it around things.
C.C.experiments with the cardboard boxes and foil.
C.C.: Wrap it up like a present!!
C.C. wraps a medium size box in tin foil and the other members of her group attempt to do the same on other boxes.
Reed: What if we make more boxes then glue them together and make a huge body?
C.C.: Yea! But wait. We need more boxes.
Reed, C.C. and Marley collect more boxes. Jack stays behind and wraps tin foil balls in wire to make eyes. Marley and Reed begin working on the head.
Marley: I want to make a square head.
Reed: My idea was we could make a head like a robot
Marley: I want this (box) to be the head
Reed: OK. We can add these (gems)
The girls take turns adding materials onto the head
Marley: I'm putting eyeballs in the middle
Reed: Can we put on the gems?
Marley: They can be the mouth.
C.C.: No, No! Not there! (CC points to a different spot)
Marley: Oh, that's a good place.

Today the guardian for shiny things gained a body.  As this involved gluing gems, there was a lot of enthusiasm for the process.  Audrey joined in, even though she had previously worked on two other guardian groups.  It was noted that the gems were not sticking to the foil with regular glue.  It was time to bring in the big guns!
Violet: That's a hot glue gun. My mommy helped me use it at home.
C.C.: We need more (gems for the body).  Remember when we looked at the transformers. There was a circle on the body
   Reed: Oh I remember.
Maxon: (holding up a circle) This could be a perfect circle.
   C.C.: That's what I was thinking.
Marley: That's what I was thinking.
C.C. and Violet find a metal circle. They hot glue it to the chest of their guardian.  While exploring the materials, the group comes across a door hinge
    C.C.: It's a door thingy.
    Maxon: It holds a door.
Audrey: It looks like a book.
Violet: (examining a rusted gold piece) It looks burnt.  (Examining the glue for the hot glue gun) Is this glue?
Audrey: Yea. This (the glue stick) gets hot and it comes out here
    Marley: So that's dry glue?
    C.C.: Yes.

Portfolio Guardian Progress

As children began to work on the portfolio guardian, collaboration, problem solving, effort and joy were once again on display.  However, we were also struck with the children's knowledge of and ability with wire.  The Tucker Room has recently used this material for the constellations, and their expertise was evident during KW.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Giacomo twisted wire into a small propeller. He decided these small loops could be the fingers for the guardian.
Today the group needed to think about legs and other details.  We started by thinking of things that are in our portfolio basket.
   George- Drawings.
   Nora - Messages.  Wire.
    Giacomo - Clay.
   Lochie - Sewing.
   Elle - Watercolors.  Paintings.
Would any of these materials work for legs?  The group concluded that cardboard tubes would be the best choice.
Lochie - The tubes could be wrapped in wire.
The group agreed with this, and spent time wrapping some tubes with wire.  Again, their dexterity with this materials has grown due to their work with wire on the constellations.
Picture
Nora realized that our cardboard tubes were not the same length. "We need to measure," she said.

This and that....

We still love puzzles, but rousing games of "High Card" (or as George accurately calls it "War" have become a new favorite.  We also loved spending time outside on this beautiful day!  Enjoy the images and have a wonderful weekend!

A different way to play "Hide and Seek"

Picture
This week, we played a version of "Hide and Seek" that helped us work on self control. Each round, one child or adult hid an object around the room. The children covered their eyes and counted to 30. After the 30 seconds, they had to look for the object. If they find it, instead of touching it or saying anything, they have to return to the leader and whisper the object's location.
Picture
It was tricky remembering to whisper the location of the object and not shout out but we did a great job with our self control.
Jordan: Why don't we shout out where the cone is?
Sylvie: Because people might feel bad that they didn't find it
Lochie: Or they might feel sad
Marley: It wouldn't be fair (if you were still lookin for the object)

After the game

Jordan: How did it feel to not call out where the cone was or touch it?
Lochie: It was tricky because we were excited (to find it)

From Concept to Construction

Picture
Lily and Cate reflect on their drawings of the Human Guardian before using natural materials to bring it to life
This week we are beginning the challenging task of taking all the previous ideas we've had for our guardians and constructing them. The small groups assessed their ideas first and thought about what they would need for each unique guardian.

The Guardian of Humans

Picture
"These (feathers) will be perfect for the wings!" - Remy
"The flowers remind me of the flower sword I drew for her" - Cate
"We could cut it (pine cones) and add it to the dress" - Remy
After we thought about our drawings and how we envisioned the guardian, the Human Guardian small group took a trip to Tucker closet. We searched for materials that inspired us.  Remy found shiny material for the guardian's dress. Cate found flowers to add to the crown. At first, the idea of creating our guardian seemed rather daunting (too hard to do).
Picture
Cate and Remy share the materials they chose for the guardian
"What part will that be, Remy?" - Lily
"I got these! They are for the dress. We can wrap them around." - Remy
Lily comes up with a different solution. She decides to create a piece of the guardian instead of tackling the whole thing at once. Lily chooses to start with the flower crown. She uses wire and other natural materials to create it. The other members of the group notice her work and use similar strategies in their work
Picture
Picture
"I could wrap another layer around (my crown)" - Lily
"I'm going to make one like Lily" - Cate
"I made it straight. Then I turned it a little bit. Then I got wire and wrapped it around. Oh! I cut the wire. My next step is to find my next layer." - Lily

Wednesday, we decided to focus on the body of our guardian. The small group used chicken wire as a base for their work. Once we started building the body, Remy began to focus on weaving natural materials into the guardian. Her work got the attention of other friends in KW who wanted to help out.

Jade notices the work on the human guardian

"WOAH!" Did you make that? That's amazing! Can I help you?" - Jade
"Sure." - Remy
"Would you like to find some materials to weave into the chicken wire?"  - Jordan
"I can help with that." - Jade

Lucas notices the work and chooses to come over and join as well

"Can I do the weaving?" - Lucas
"OK. The hand needs to hold the flowers." - Remy

The Message Guardian

Picture
Finlay and Wilder use specificities materials on the floor to model their guardian
The Message Guardian small group decided to take a different approach began the process of building their guardian. They used their materials first to simulate what the guardian would look like first before starting the process of creating it. They also choose to incorporate their symbols into the work
Picture
Finlay - (Finding a circular symbol).  This would look cool.  Since this looks really ancient, maybe we could glue it on to him.  This could be on the forehead.
Lucas -  (Holding a large octopus symbol) Maybe we could use this.
Wilder - We need to use these symbols (setting aside some of his favorites).
Jill - Jen suggested a way that we could include your symbols on the guardian.  We could make clay impressions of them and use them on the guardian.

The children agree that this is a good plan.  While working with the clay….

Finlay - I’m including everyone.
Wilder - Me, too.
Jade - I’m including Bea.
Picture
Picture
Having completed stamping the symbols in clay, the group continues to explore materials for the body of the guardian.  Jade had previously indicated that the body could be a box, so children looked through the boxes and considered the possibilities
Picture
Picture
Finlay - (Placing his favorite symbol in a box) Maybe this could be inside of here.  (Selecting a black box). I have an idea.  We can hide this material in here because it’s his weakness.  ( Finding a box that has a flip lid) Let me show you how this works.  It spring open to reveal what is inside.
Wilder -  The scissors can be for the arms.
Everyone enthusiastically agrees.
Wilder -  (Cutting ribbons).  These could be his legs.  (He arranges a guardian on the floor with a box body and ribbon legs.)
The scissor arms are very popular.  More scissors are needed and found.
Finlay - (Arranging scissors all around a box). This is my guardian.
Wilder - He doesn’t have any legs.
 Finlay - He’s a ghost guardian.
Meanwhile, Jade has found a shoebox.
Jade - I think this could be the body.  (She wraps it with yellow ribbon) And this could be his belt.
Jill - I remember that you though his body should be blue.
Jade - Yes, dark blue.  (She identifies the blue paper that she likes and using glue and blue tape, she and Lucas proceed to cover the box with blue paper.  Jade goes on to select another box that can be the head.)
Lucas - We can use buttons and you can press the buttons and that will make him function.
The Message Guardian small group chose to focus on the arms for today's work. The group decided to create scissor arms, an idea that friends had previously agreed upon. They chose to use wire and used scissors to connect their materials and problem solved how to make them functional.
Picture
A prototype of one of the scissor arms
Picture
Finlay experiments with the wire and materials
Jill - What was our plan for the arms
Committee - With scissors!
Finlay - (Working with scissors and wire) I already made two arms
Jade - (With her wire and scissors) I think these should be the arms
Cape - (Observing the groups) Are you guys using scissors for the arms.
Jade - Yes. We have to attach them to the body.
Cape - Hot glue could attach it. I know.
Jade - I make things with my dad. We're making a birdhouse.
Lucas - This is how the arms protect the messages. Everyone who is trying to ruin the messages, these arms will cut them in half.
Jade - How many arms should he have?
Cape - Think 2 or 3 or 4
Jade - Do you think the face should be scary?
Cape - Yes. Like a red and orange monster face
Wilder - I think the head should be blue to match the body.

A Quick Look at our Week

Picture
It's time to get to work!  Last week, Jack asked if it was still just an "idea day," in reference to our guardian work.  This week, building can begin for a few of our groups.  We are excited to see the problem solving, negotiation, collaboration, and novel use of materials that will take place as we put our guardians together!  We will be sure to keep you posted as this process evolves.
It's hard to believe, but Spring Break is right around the corner.  If you wish to meet with us for a conference before break, please sign up this week.  If you need the schedule sent to you again, please email us and we will send it out.  Thanks!

Guardian Groups

Yesterday, Sylvie gathered a group of classmates to flesh out the ideas for the Constellation Guardian.  George, Nora, Audrey, and Reed world along with Sylvie to generate more ideas.  We reminded the group that last week Lochie had suggested two guardians: one that hang from the ceiling near the constellations and one that guards from the floor.
Sylvie - Make sure it (the guardain) covers both sides (of the constellation) so it can protect it.
Reed - Are you saying there should be eyes on every side of the guardian.
It was decided that there could be eyes on the front and the back.
Sylvie - It can hang from the ceiling and connect to the floor.
Jill -  How can we make sure everyone knows that his guardian is for the constellation.
Sylvie - I have an idea of how people could know it's for the constellation.  We could use the same materials we used for the constellation.  Like beads and wire.  Then people would know it's for the constellation.
Audrey - We should have stars on the guardian.
Reed - Like maybe add a paper star.
Sylvie - Or make a star shape out of wire.  I know how to make it a powerful guardian.  Maybe it should have weapons.
Nora - We could use static electricity.  Jack knows a lot about static electricity.
Reed - It could have paper airplanes that it shoots at the bad guys.  (You can see that Reed is thinking about something that could be in the sky...airplanes...as well as something that KW has made before... paper airplanes.)
Picture
Reed - He has yellow teeth because he never brushed his teeth.  And it's going to have music.  It will be scary music and there will be paper airplanes flying down.  All the paper airplanes are pink.
Picture
Sylvie - Mine is turning all green because he ate all the green food.
Picture
Audrey - Mine is also turning different colors.  Sylvie's is all green and mine is different colors.
Picture
Nora - This (the green streak in the upper right) is the power going into the guardian.  This (the blue speckled area). is the water and it gets into the eyes of a bad guy.
Picture
George's idea is designed to stand on the floor under the constellations.  If you look closely you can see guardian figures climbing to the top.

The Portfolio Guardian

This week we are imagining ways that the guardians could reflect the area the are intended to guard.  The portfolio group started right off with this idea, even with out a question or prompt from the teacher!
Jack -  I think the portfolio guardian should be made out of portfolios!
The group starts to discuss using a wire basket for the body.
Elle - But what could be the legs?
    Jack- Wood !
Elle - (Gathering some blocks) What about these?
Giacomo - We could use those blocks to make a model.
C.C. - (Thinking about the wire used for the body). The wire will have to be really strong.
Elle and CC. suggest that the small LED candles could be eyes for the guardian.
Jack - We're just putting the guardians there in case the bad guys throw a rope up to the window and break in.
C.C. - What about hair?  We could use some string!

Picture
Giacomo uses a wire basket to demonstrate that it would be a good size for the guardian's body.
Picture
C.C. strikes a pose to show how the portfolio guardian should stand.
Picture
The group came up with this model for the portfolio guardian.
This group had a unified vision, so their drawings are very similar.  Although Audrey had participated in yesterday's small group, she volunteered to join this one as well.  Notice how even their teeth are grid-like!

The Guardian for Shiny Things

The portfolio example proved pretty straight-forward.  Children were able to make connections between the item that should be protected and the guard that will do the protecting.  Thinking about a guardian for shiny things was a little more ambiguous.  Children seemed likely to connect their ideas for this guard to what they knew about the transformers or robots.
Maxon -  (It could be )blue and  it shoots lasers.
   Marley and Violet - It's a robot.
   Maxon - I think it's a transformer.
Violet - It's medium (in size).
   Maxon - I agree.
Violet - Marley - Do you think it's medium?
   Marley - I think it's medium because I'm medium
Maxon - I think he's invisible during the day and shiny at night.
Violet - It has shiny things.
Maxon - Maybe a golden treasure.
Picture
Marley adds sparkles on top of her design.  "His heart is on the outside."
Picture
Maxon added blue tubes to his drawing.  "There are tubes because he's a robot."
Picture
Violet used orange to indicate the "shiny things" on her guardian.

The Committees at Work

Happy 25th, St. John's!

It was a wonderful day of celebration all morning long! Both Brown Room and Tucker Room ate our lemon-yogurt cake at snack.  The reviews were less than enthusiastic... clearly children preferred the chocolate cake we baked for National Chocolate Cake Day!  Nevertheless, a good time was had by all.  Thanks to all the families who came to participate in sewing and weaving.  We can't wait until this rainbow is hangin in our greeting hallway.  A special thank-you to Carola Mamberto for creating an exquisite and moving video!  Enjoy these image and have a wonderful weekend!
