Continued Cooking
Small World RevisitedChildren built and extensive small world today. Initially, Cate, Finlay, and Saul built their individual areas and then worked collaboratively after the environments were complete. Finlay - I have a house for a dinosaur and a lion. Cate - I made a dinosaur house. They have a dog. Saul - I'm building a house for any animals. Cate - Mine is a tropical paradise. We're having a party. We hope to see you nest Wednesday, at 9:15in Blake Hall!

Leaf Impressions
A Surprise Monday Blog!We thought we would share our projections earlier this week. Here's some highlights: We are excited to welcome Cal to KW on Wednesdays and Fridays. We will enjoy the beautiful fall weather by spending more time outside. We will complete the canvas squares for our table runners and begin the planning process for putting it all together! We also have a special announcement! Save the date for a KW Coffee next Wednesday, October 5th. Meet us in Blake Hall at 9:15!Sensational Sewing!
Cars in ConstructionOn Thursday, children built a series of roads that curved around the large construction table. These streets were the perfect for use by Matchbox cars. There was some talk of building a race track. We will see if that develops in the future! Small World ScenariosCreating small worlds has been a big hit all week. Today Finlay and Cate reflected on their work before they launched into play today. Finlay - My favorite thing was the sting ray. Cate - My favorite thing was the dinosaur. Finlay - We built ancient buildings that could open up. Cate - We were next door neighbors and we hid games. The sting ray and thaw dinosaurs were the kings.
A Quick Look at Everything Else!
Enjoy these images and have a great weekend!Last week's work included an impressive start on the canvas squares that will become our table runners. This week, we are adding another experience' machine sewing. We will present the construction challenge of building tall structures that are stable. We have novel materials for us on the light table and this group loves puzzles! Buckle up for a fun week!
Machine Sewing
While sewing: Hugh - How do we put another thread on? Brigitte - We can use another color. Hugh - Yeah! I want to do that! Reflecting on using the sewing machine: Ellie - It's sewing and sewing. Push a button and zoom, zoom, zoom. Luke -I was a little scared when it started. Then it was a little sad because the fabric is actually alive and the needle is poking it. Lucas - It sewed really good. You can move the fabric around. Here's our work! As you can see, some children were drew while others used the machine.
Tall BuildingsThe construction area is always a popular place to collaborate and create. Last week, we noticed that many of our buildings were low and horizontal. This week, we offered a strategy for making taller buildings that are still stable: criss-cross building. The children easily implemented this strategy and were pleased with the results. Saul - It's super-duper stable! Today, children implemented the criss-cross strategy and built really tall! Jade - That's starting to look dangerous. Wilder - it can never get too tall! Hugh - It could get dangerous. If it starts to fall, it will be like it's raining blocks. Jade - Then we would have to run to the hallway. Luke - it was huge! I thought it was going to fall! We can't wait to see what the rest of the week brings!"Meet the child. What a gift! |
As we complete the first two weeks of children, it truly has been a gift to meet the children. In KW, we have also emphasized the children getting to know each other. As we've noted before, we have started most of our afternoons with the question, "What do you want your friends to know about you?" We have recorded their responses and visual representations in the hallway. We've noticed children responding to this work, including children who aren't in the KW program! |
Children made mention of their families as they shared things about themselves. For example, Ford talked about playing transformers with his dad and Seon loves a number game that she plays with her mom. We are hoping to make the hallway bulletin board an interactive, "living" display of our work and the the responses to our work. Please share your refections, questions, and comments on a piece of paper and put it anywhere on the board. We really value your input! |
These conversations have helped children understand who they are as individuals. There were many commonalities: a number of children like pizza and dinosaurs, for example. Who we are also includes bigger questions: Who are we as a community? Who are we as a school? We began exploring these ideas by taking some tours of the school. |
Animal Enclosures in ConstructionAfter our success in building a Quidditch stadium on Wednesday, we turned our attention to another classroom interest: animal enclosures. Louisa has a special affinity for horses, so she began building with a horse and some friends. There was a sheet of blue paper on the construction table, which represented a body of water. Seon - (Adding a small whale). Another sea animal. I will get some more animals. Here's a cute little penguin. Louisa - (Referring to a horse and a zebra). They're friends. Seon - I'm working together with Louisa. Louisa - (Adding bead to her building area) This is food. This is a toucan. He's drinking. (Louisa brings other small animals to her area.) They're living there. Seon - I'm bringing rocks to the animals. (She adds some cubes to the area). This is an animal bed. I'm making a bigger one. I'm having so much fun! |
Final NoteThe quotation at the beginning of the blog came from the most recent episode from the "Awakened to Reggio" podcast. The Podcast is a series of conversations with people who are "changing the landscape of early childhood education through the lens of the Reggio approach." It's hosted by Sandy Lanes, who is a Reggio-inspired educator and consultant from the area. If you are a podcast enthusiast, we can enthusiastically recommend this one! |
Seon spent most of her afternoon with small building materials. Seon - It's a forest. It's a huge forest because there's a lot of trees. There's a house in the forest. | Seon- And here's a big square. It's a playground. The above photo shows Seon's completed landscape. Her linear design extends down the length of the table. |
Quidditch is in the air. Yesterday, children zoomed around the outdoor classroom on their Quidditch brooms (and rakes and shovels). Last week, Hugh and Wilder noticed silver rods with circles on the top and thought they would be perfect for a quidditch game. This became our construction challenge today. |
Getting to Know Each OtherEach day as we have come together, we have asked children to share "one thing you want your friends to know about you." There's been so many great responses and children are noticing connections with their classmates. Beginning yesterday, we asked the children to draw a representation of one of the things. We saw the children give this task careful attention and the resulting drawings are tremendous. This work will continue next week. You can check out the documentation featuring our ideas and drawings in the hall. |
It's been wonderful to welcome children to the KW program. For the first time in over two -years, KW is back to being a mixed age group of children. Children readily adapted to this change, although Cate initially asked, "Why are Rainey Room Children here?" She went on to answer her own question with a theory, "Oh, because it's 'K Double You,' so there has to be double classes." There's many cool features to having a mixed group. In general, the Tucker children serve as leaders and mentors for the younger children. The Rainey children get to explore a new space (we meet in the Tucker Room) and learn along with older peers. Children also enjoy having fun with a group of friends that is different from the morning program. |
Construction ConnectionsThe Tucker Room features an expansive construction area, which is a big draw for all the children. As children worked in this space, we saw more cross- classroom connections being made. Cape and Jade had worked on a building for their stuffed animals. Jade - It's a house for the lovies. Cape - Ozzie goes down here (on the lower level) and Sweetie goes up here ( the upper level). When Louisa expressed an interest in doing them, Cape and "Sweetie" greeted the animals that she brought over. |
