More Guardian Map Drawings

An enthusiastic small group of Wilder, Hugh, and Frances went to the children's bathroom to draw the location of the constellation guardian. They were especially excited at the possibility of drawing toilets and sinks to provide context for the eventual school wide guardians map.

Transformation Drawings

In the spirit of guardian discussions, we reintroduced transformation drawings, which consist of transforming an image into something different. On Tuesday Seon drew a building that transformed into a volcano. Ellie made a design that transformed into a dog.
Sometimes it takes time for an idea to take hold.  Today, more children were invested in the transformation drawings.
Finlay drew a centipede that turned into a fish. Hugh drew a race car that transformed into a dog. Jade drew a police station that turned into tentacles. Louisa made a dancing horse and butterflies that transformed into a dog. Lucas drew a red robot that  became a polar bear. Mimi drew a rainbow that became a golden ring. Saul made a truck that turned into an astronaut. Remy drew a cake that transformed into a butterfly. Lily drew winter that turned into spring. Cal made a Santa that transformed into mushrooms.

An Afternoon of Vehicles

Today, Cal was one of the table setters and wanted to use vehicles.  Modes of transportation were very popular throughout the afternoon.

Jade and Luke were working on a pirate ship near the vehicle table.  They eventually moved most of their ship to the big table and everyone collaborated on a land and sea transportation scenario.

Map Making

Earlier this week, we took a look at the maps that children drew last week.  The children had diligently included all the rooms and knew where to place the guardians.  However, we noticed some inaccuracies in these drawings. Children made observations about the relative size of classrooms and location of key elements of the school like the mailboxes. In order to create a more accurate map, children agreed that they could draw individual parts of the school and try to put them together like a puzzle.
Picture
This was our mission on Thursday.  A small group started at the entry of the preschool and focused on the first two guardians that they encountered.

As children draw, they use a wide range of approaches.  Some children will make a more imaginative representation of what they see, all the while enjoying the process of making a mark on the paper.  Some children want to included every detail.  For example, as Lily drew the preschool door and the human guardian, she included the keypad for opening the door saying, ""I only did 1,2,1,2."  No matter how children choose to draw, it remains a way for them to express their thoughts and ideas.

Playing a New Game

While five children were drawing yesterday, everyone else chose to play "Memory" for the first time in KW.   As they played, children had to remember to take turn, to focus on the cards other children turned over, and to keep each card is its place.  The cards featured North America Wildlife and children enjoyed hearing the name of each animal represented.  We'll be bringing the game out more often!

Centerpieces, Continued

On our last day of KW before Thanksgiving, we worked on centerpieces.  Our ginkgo clay vase was out of the kiln, so we filled it with branches and beautiful beads, fabric, buttons, and natural materials.
We also glazed our vase with the doily impressions.  Children were please with how their vases looked since they've been fired.
Ford - It looks so good.  My mom and dad won't believe it.
Cape - It's so beautiful.  It looks like it comes from part of the world.  Like Japan.

This and that...

  • On Thursday , we ate the pumpkin pie...to mixed reviews.  Hugh said it was soft and silky, but Luke thought it was slimy.
  • There's been a lot of building, especially with the new magnatiles.
  • Small world continues to be popular, as does message center.
  • We had fun outside in the sunshine.

There was a lot of collaboration in the building area today.  There was a White House for President Sweetie and Jade's King Crab.  Cape later pointed out that the beautiful wall built by Mimi, Ellie, and Zari could be the fence protecting the White House.

It was so wonderful to welcome Zari to KW yesterday.  She did a little of everything, including table setting with Remy.  As she arranged materials on the table she said, "I'm going to make this table even more beautiful."

Thanksgiving is in the Air!

There's no KW next week, so we got into the spirit this week by making pumpkin pie.  We are excited to eat it tomorrow!
We also prepared materials for  use during the St. John's celebration.  Children worked on fall-inspired sewing and glazed a clay vase.  Look for them next Tuesday on the feast tables!

Family Feast Drawings

As we talk about  Thanksgiving, children have mentioned eating together with a variety of family and friends.  We see enthusiasm for drawing families eating together.  Some children have done a few drafts as they make corrections in the representation of this three-dimensional act in two dimensions.

Ford drew his family at the table. "I'm making their faces green."

We're Grateful for the Wish Tree!

A big thank you goes out to all who purchased wish tree items.  We have started to receive these new gifts and children were thrilled to use them right away!

A quick look at our week

Picture
Thanksgiving is in the air!  Next week, there is no KW due the noon dismissal on Tuesday!  This week we will be working on  vases and other centerpieces for the Thanksgiving feast.   We will also take another look at our guardian maps and see if they need some revisions.  Our cooking project will be to make a pumpkin pie.
We will also welcome Zari to KW as she joins our program on Tuesdays and Fridays!

Look at this colorful clay that came out of the kiln yesterday! We will continue to work on glazing and firing clay this week.  Some of these pieces will find their way into our table setting materials!

Map Making

On Tuesday, children began working on maps showing where in the school the guardians are located.  Cate and Finlay chose to work on individual maps, while Jade, Hugh, Wilder and Cape all worked together.
Before dismissal, they reflected on their work:
Cape - I did little arrows to tell you where to go.
   Finlay - It's a creepy map.
Cate - Because of the creepy stairs.
    Jade - There's different rooms.
Jill - I've noticed that the maps are different.  do you think you have all the rooms on them?
    Wilder - We have everything!

Continued Clay Work

"I remember making the pinch pot"

We heard this from several children as they added glaze to their clay creations on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Dinner Drawings

Children have been very invested in drawing their families eating together.  As we have mentioned, there are several challenges any time they represent a three-dimensional idea in two dimensions.  Here's some of Wednesday's work!
Picture
Cate's drawing features some people in profile while others are facing forward. She also included the dog in her dinner drawing.
Picture
Hugh included a new point of view in his drawing. He realized that if you look at the table from the living room, you would see everyone's back.
Picture
Remy drew the table and the carpet around it. Afterwards she laughed as she observed that her drawing of dinner looks like a volcano.
Picture
This is one of Ellie's first representational drawings. She drew her mom at the top of the page and said, "Mommy looks like a puppy."
Picture
Wilder drew a bird's-eye view of his dinner table. He drew a tall high chair for Maeve.
Picture
Finlay drew two people sitting on each side of the table.
Thanks to the families who met with us during the conference days!  Have a wonderful weekend!

A quick look at our week

Picture
It's a very short week in KW!  We're looking forward to seeing many parents on Thursday and Friday for conferences.  Until then, children will be drawing, glazing clay, doing puzzles, laughing together outside, and creating new scenarios for small world!

Here's the lovely lemon cake that KW baked last Friday!  We presented it to Molly at staff meeting yesterday, along with all the birthday messages that KW children made for her.  The KW children are excellent bakers and everyone enjoyed the cake.  After lunch today, children had a small taste for themselves.  Everyone loved it, although Ford thought it was a little sour!

"We're making this to make our table more beautiful."              Wilder

On Thursday, we put the finishing touches on our third vase.  Wilder was very enthusiastic about explaining the process to children who had not worked on the vase on Wednesday.

The Drawing Challenge

Yesterday, children took on the challenge of drawing their family eating together.  This drawing opportunity was difficult for a number of reasons.  To begin with, any time a three-dimensional event is translated to two dimensions, there are several problems to solve.  What will be the point of view of the drawing?  How will people be included?  Most children opted to take a bird's eye view of the table, although Cape drew a side view.  Here's their drawings and some  aspects of the work that Brigitte, Jill, and Molly reflected on after the children drew.

Elements of Literacy

Both Lily and Cape found a way to identify the people in their drawings.  Lily put the initials of her family members above each person.  Cape wrote the names of the people in the drawing.

Michael drew himself and his two brothers, just like the photo in our hallway documentation.

Seon included her grandparents in her drawing. She also put food on the table for everyone to eat. (Notice how she decided the legs of the chairs should go behind the chairs instead of to the side.)
Picture
Mimi wanted to fill the table with chairs and people. Notice how she has each person facing the table. It must be a celebration, as she has included a banner and two balloons.

Cake Baking!

We baked a lemon cake today!  Children patiently took turns measuring, zesting the lemon, and mixing the batter.  The room smelled so good while we were working!

This and that...

  • The weather has been lovely, and we have had a great time outside (and inside the cob house!).
  • We've been working on extra-special messages for some special people.
  • A large group spent time in small world today.  Somewhat remarkably, it was STILL Halloween in small world!

Leaves and Light

We've found some beautiful leaves in the neighborhood.  Take a look at our lovely light table compositions and have a great weekend!

Light and Shadow

On Tuesday, we brought back building with spooky projection.  Instead of thinking about Halloween, Jade, Wilder, Hugh, and Ford decided to build Hogwarts.  Here's a little bit of the conversation that the children engaged in while building
   Hugh -  Hogwarts is magic.
Wilder - There are owls; they bring people messages.
Hugh - The chocolate frogs are the most disgusting things to me in Harry Potter.
Wilder - They eat them on the train.
Hugh -  Here is where all the owl sleep (on the highest tower).
Ford -  My sisters love Harry Potter.
Jade - The building has two coffins; it has an engine, a ghost, a monster lock, a treasure map for witches, and an air machine.
Wilder - I made a bed for Ron’s rat, Scabbers, Hermione has a cat, and Harry Potter has an owl named Hedwig.

Projecting Hogwarts

Picture

Picture
Based on Tuesday's interest in Hogwarts, today children built with projections of that magical place.  We used the above images as building backdrops.

In the photo on the left, you can see that some materials were used like wand as the children interacted with the projected images.  Chants of "Leviosa" could be heard throughout the afternoon.

Clay, Day 1

Last month, we completed our table runners to enhance our table setting and lunch experience. This month, we're adding vases for each table, which will eventually be filled with flowers, branches and other seasonal natural materials.  On Tuesday, our focus was using slabs and making impressions for the vases.  Although all KW children have experience with this material, their clay work has seldom required them to build with clay.  Since clay is initially relatively soft, making upright pieces involves challenges.   Using armature as a form of support allows the clay to remain upright until it dries. On Tuesday, we worked on two vases.  The first included impressions of doilies, and the second had ginkgo leaf impression.  As they worked, children grew more confident with the process and the challenges involved.
"We made one and then we made an easier one."       Remy

Clay, Day 2

A different technique was used as children began working on their third vase. This consisted of adhering overlapping circles together around the armature.  Bailee was the first to try this out, and then spent time instructing her friends.  The pattern of "circle, glue, circle, glue" was how the children described their work on this vase.

A Quick Look at our Week

Picture
It's a new month!  Clay was a big hit last week and we will continue working with it this week.  We will be working on clay vases to enhance our table setting routine.  Last Friday, building with spooky projections was such fun.  We will bring that back today as well.  Of course, we always have time for small world, messages, and puzzles.
