BIG Building!

On Tuesday, children built with an image projected on the shadow screen.  The construction crew wanted to use an image of Hogwarts in winter, and selected the image to the left.  Here's a sampling of the conversation as they worked.
Hugh - First we need some grass (as he places a piece of turf.)
Wilder - (Working on a tall tower) This can be the chimney.
Hugh - Don't forget about the train tracks for the Hogwarts Express.
Mimi - I like that castle.
Wilder - You know who are the baddest people in Hogwarts?  Malfoy and Snape.
Saul - (Referring to part of the building) This is the Hogwarts living room.
Ellie - It looks like a haunted house.
Wilder - Dobby gave Harry a hat for Christmas. Guess what?  Dobby got to work at Hogwarts.
Zari - (While adding blocks to the building) I hope it doesn't fall down!

On Wednesday, we built with vehicles and holiday lights.  Cal and Seon built a series of roads and bridges and filled them with vehicles.
   Seon - There's so many vehicles, I can't count!
Cal - Yeah, so much traffic.
Seon - Yeah, the blue car can't move!

Small Building

Amidst all this big building, small world has still been going strong.  The holiday theme has continued, although small world inhabitants also had to get their work done.  Cate's creature put out a "Do Not Disturb" sign, "Because we are having a special meeting and no one can disturb."    Familiar story lines were also part of small world this week.  Finlay told us the Grinch visited small world.
Finlay - The grinch came and stole all the presents, and just like in the story, he attended the feast and he turned good.
Cape - Yeah, his heart grew three sizes.

What is special about getting a message?
"It means someone loves us."
         Wilder

Message making has been popular all week.  Lucila, family members, and friends were the lucky recipients.

Small Sewing

On Wednesday, some children worked with small sewing hoops to create ornaments for their families.  Children at the sewing table also were able to watch some of the World Cup game.  Go France!!

Thinking of Others

The holiday season is the perfect time to think about others and prepare gifts, surprises, or messages for them.  This season we are working on gifts and messages for two special people in our community.

On Thursday, we added glaze to our small serving dish for Kurt.  Kurt works in the church office and we often see him at dismissal.

We have also been working on messages for Lucila.  Lucila cleans our school in the evenings, along with Victor.  She will be retiring soon after about 20 years of working with us.  We wish her all the best!

Small World Holidays

The holiday season has hit small world.  We've added new materials to this experience and children have responded by creating new environments and story lines.  Here's a sample of what took place today:
Saul - It's Christmas and Hanukkah.
Hugh - The Dino (the character that he's using) Has to work on Christmas.
Saul - We've got liquid presents, it's a present with lots of liquid inside.  For drinking.
Finlay - I made a stocking for the stingray.  It's Christmas morning.
Brigitte - Where do the animals find presents for their friends?
   Cate - From Santa!!!
Saul - We got candies and toy trucks.
Meanwhile, Hugh is busy cooking a Christmas and Hanukkah dinner.
One friend considers having a "boy only" house, but that would mean having no moms or sisters.

Hugh - If I didn't have a mommy, that means it would be just dad and me in the house.  And if I didn't have a mom, my dad will make so many mistakes.  You know, mom is like the boss at home.

This and that...

  • We tested the persimmon bread.  It was not a big hit!
  • We've had a lot of fun outside, now that the rain has stopped. Drawing outside has been especially popular.
  • On Thursday, we painted with some of the paints that were mixed in morning programs.
  • Today, some friends worked with the sewing machine and built with lights.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Making Persimmon Bread!

We are fortunate to have a beautiful persimmon tree in our outdoor classroom.  Last week, we were able to get a few off the tree.  It's a good thing we got them then, because the birds seem to be enjoying them this week.  Today we chopped, measured, and mixed to make persimmon bread that we will serve tomorrow and Friday.  Hopefully it will be good, because at this point, some of us have doubts.
     "It looks disgusting, right now."

December Fun!

December is the month for holidays and the World Cup.  Today in the KW World Cup, France played the United Sates.  Today's final score:  USA 0, France 0.  Once we were indoors, children enjoyed making holiday messages for family and friends.

Our ECES Presentation

Yesterday, St John's welcomed educators for an opportunity to visit our school and listen to a presentation about last year's guardian project.  Many thanks to the parents that attended the presentation:  Courtney Gugino, Jess Bieligk, and Jennie Lopez!

Sharing our Work with the Community

On Wednesday, Brigitte attended the DC Reggio Emilia Alliance (DCREA) meeting.  DCREA is a study group committed to supporting professional discourse through research and collaboration.  For this meeting, attendees were encouraged to bring an artifact, documentation, or a photo from their work that reflected their values.   Brigitte brought the documentation and the table runner pictured here.
Attendees at the meeting walked around and looked at everyone's work.  they shared their comments or reflections through written messages.  Here's a sampling of the messages that were left near the KW work samples.
  • Togetherness, conversations, sharing
  • Community, materials, belonging
  • The power of art as identity and connection
  • Painting on a different texture other than paper is great
  • Beautiful focus, valuing togetherness, it was unexpected to see a representation of the lunch table
  • Sense of community, sharing, connection
  • Diversity of materials -- such a wide variety, everyone has a choice
  • This teacher values individuality and at the same time inclusion
  • Students building strong
  • This teacher values individuality and at the same time inclusion
  • I love that families were also included in the project.

Educators looking at the KW artifacts.
We were thrilled that other educators could "read" our KW work so accurately.  Our KW community clearly values the pleasure and beauty we find when we eat together.  No wonder children often talk about lunch as their favorite part of the afternoon.

Continuing our Table Runners

Now that Cal and Zari have joined our ranks, we needed to extend our table runner.  They were both excited to work with the machine today to create beautiful individual squares that will be added to one runner next week.  Ellie also was happy to take another turn at the machine!

Game Day!

Thursday was game and puzzle day in KW.  During our outside time, we played a lively "Mr. Fox."  After lunch, we offered four games, a puzzle, and holiday messages.

The Dinosaur Egg Game
Luke brought in a game from home which consist of stealing the dinosaur's eggs from the nest without  getting snatch by the mommy dinosaur . Jade played the game earlier, so she was able to explain the rules to her Rainey Room friends in KW.
Jade: You have to lift the leaf, first you roll the die, if you roll out an "X", you miss your turn. If you roll a blue, you take the tweezer, lift the leaf and you get the blue egg.
Ford: I can't get it! I'm scared!
Luke: Don't be scared, I am holding him (the dinosaur) back. Good, now it's Seon's turn. Don't get bitten Seon.
Seon rolled out a yellow, so everyone cheered " Get the yellow, get the yellow, get the yellow, Yay!! she did it.
Luke: Now it's Ellie's turn, do you want me to roll it for you Ellie?
Ellie: I can't do it, he's going to bite me.

Finlay also brought a game from home:  "Poop Bingo."
"We can just call it Bingo," Finlay diplomatically told us! Children enjoyed playing it until their cards were full.  We also played Memory and Zingo.  In addition, the children collaborated to complete a 100 - piece puzzle.

Tis the Season!

The holiday spirit is in the air!  Each December, classroom prepare gifts for the people that support our programs throughout the year.  This year, the KW crew is working on a gift for Kurt.  We'll be making him a clay dish that will be filled with some sort of sweet treats.  As we talked about the gift, we asked if the children knew Kurt.
Ford - He's a worker.  In the window (the window near where we sit for dismissal).  In the office.
As we began to work with clay, several children were eager to get their hands on it!
Bailee - My favorite thing is to touch it (the clay).
We started working on a dish.... we'll keep you posted on our progress!

Our messages have become festive as well.  Children enjoyed using the new papers and materials to make special messages for friends and family members.
