"We're making this to make our table more beautiful."              Wilder

On Thursday, we put the finishing touches on our third vase.  Wilder was very enthusiastic about explaining the process to children who had not worked on the vase on Wednesday.

The Drawing Challenge

Yesterday, children took on the challenge of drawing their family eating together.  This drawing opportunity was difficult for a number of reasons.  To begin with, any time a three-dimensional event is translated to two dimensions, there are several problems to solve.  What will be the point of view of the drawing?  How will people be included?  Most children opted to take a bird's eye view of the table, although Cape drew a side view.  Here's their drawings and some  aspects of the work that Brigitte, Jill, and Molly reflected on after the children drew.

Elements of Literacy

Both Lily and Cape found a way to identify the people in their drawings.  Lily put the initials of her family members above each person.  Cape wrote the names of the people in the drawing.

Michael drew himself and his two brothers, just like the photo in our hallway documentation.

Seon included her grandparents in her drawing. She also put food on the table for everyone to eat. (Notice how she decided the legs of the chairs should go behind the chairs instead of to the side.)

Mimi wanted to fill the table with chairs and people. Notice how she has each person facing the table. It must be a celebration, as she has included a banner and two balloons.

Cake Baking!

We baked a lemon cake today!  Children patiently took turns measuring, zesting the lemon, and mixing the batter.  The room smelled so good while we were working!

This and that...

  • The weather has been lovely, and we have had a great time outside (and inside the cob house!).
  • We've been working on extra-special messages for some special people.
  • A large group spent time in small world today.  Somewhat remarkably, it was STILL Halloween in small world!

Leaves and Light

We've found some beautiful leaves in the neighborhood.  Take a look at our lovely light table compositions and have a great weekend!
