Clay Days

"For pinch pots, you don't need really need any tools, just your hands."   Lily

This week's clay work started with the intention to make pinch pots that could be used for table setting, along with our stunning table runners.  Children worked with their previous knowledge of this material and created several small bowl-like pieces that we will put to good use.  As they worked, children made other discoveries and shared their ideas.
While making a pinch pot on Wednesday, Hugh flipped his over and noticed it looked like an egg.  He added a flat circle to transform the pot into a sunny-side-up egg.  Seeing him work, Frannie also made one.  Then on Thursday, Seon made a sunny-side-up egg, along with tiny pancakes for small world.

In a similar fashion, children borrowed ideas from one another on Thursday.  Jade started rolling coils, with the intention of making a container from them.  She discovered that her coil also looked like a snail.  Intrigued by this idea, Seon and Wilder made snails of their own.

Spooky, Shadowy Structures

The Projectionists

Today was our last KW day before Halloween.  We celebrated by making a large, spooky building with several creepy characters.  We also projected Halloween images (see above left) onto the shadow screen to add to the atmosphere.  Children took turns being the projectionist at the overhead projector and also enjoyed making shadows with their bodies.
Saul - This is a spooky building.
Cape - Spooky house!  (Noticing one of the halloween figures) A pharaoh!
Saul - (While building with red stained glass blocks) If we use red block, it makes a red shadow.
Jade - They ( the halloween figures) might fight or they might be friends.
Cape - The rats have died. the witch poisoned them.
Jade - The pharaoh died!  ((The children place him in a hollow block "tomb."

Small Scale Building

While most children were engaged in building big this afternoon, some children spent their time in small world.  The Halloween theme was present there as well.
Finlay - It's a scary place, because everyday is Halloween. That's why there's so much candy.  The lion is our favorite trick-or-treater.  Guess what -- even the fish pond has candies.  The sting ray is their favorite.  The otter owns the place.  The lion carries the candies on his back.

Eating Together Reflections

We have started to bring our "eating together" documentation to our KW meeting.  Children have been fascinated by the images and words shared by their families.  We have almost all of our families represented and would love to include the remaining four families.  Remember, it doesn't have to be anything fancy.  It can be eating pizza during movie night, a birthday or holiday celebration.  It can be at a restaurant or at home, inside or outside.  It doesn't have to include everyone in your family and it can include other relatives, friends, or care givers.
