"I put this (tape) on (the nose) so it would be stronger when it hits the ground." - Nora
Hello everyone. What a frightful Friday it is! But that never stops KW from our amazing work. As many of you know, we have been constructing paper airplanes. This week, we have been testing different designs, adding passengers and changing elevation levels.

Testing Our Planes

Sylvie: When I was standing there (on top of the mud kitchen), my plane did a half circle.
C.C.: (Measuring distance by steps) I got 8 steps
Sylvie: I had 7 steps
Sylvie: (Throwing her plane from on top of the slide) Mine did a loop-de-loop. That's pretty crazy
A Deeper Dive into Measuring Distance

We noticed that different friends took different sized steps when they measured how far their paper airplanes flew. For example, C.C. took small steps when measuring the flight of her plane but Jack took much larger steps. The steps were not a uniform unit of measurement. To more accurately measure the distance of our paper airplanes, we went to Blake Hall and measure with a tape measure in inches and threw from the same location.

Each friend had 3 tries to see how far their plane went. Inbetween throws, KW children were encouraged to see what modifications they could make such as adding passengers or fixing creases that had come undone.

Audrey: I got it 95(inches!
After each throw, our friends practiced using a tape measure to measure the distance

Nora's new design in a success!
"I got 210. Did you see that?"

Nora decides to try a more complicated design.

CC: I want to build it the way Nora made it.
Nora: I want to make mine the hard way.

CC: Mine went 17 steps because it's a new design.

Maxon: This is easy for me. Making the wings is easy. If it has longer wings, it will go farther.

Tiles for a new Mosaic

KW will be working on a gift for the school. New mosaics for the wooden frames around the tower dispensers in the child and staff bathrooms. First, we have to make the tiles. Children used cutting tools to create tiles from clay and then glazed them to make a variety of pieces for our mosaic.
