Welcome Back to KW

It’s so great to see old friends and start making new ones. Jill and Jordan are so excited to welcome friends back to Kids Workshop. This week, we are taking time to learn more about KW, all the opportunities we have and how the afternoon works.

Before we head up for lunch, KW takes some time to move around outside to renew ourselves for the day ahead. Jordan shared the first of many games, “Drop that Cookie.” We practiced sharing with limited resources as well as spatial awareness. The children were given a limited amount of “cookies.” If you do not have one, tag a friend and they will drop their cookie for you while avoiding children that are trying to tag you safely.

Inside, we got to open our gifts from the parents!

Each day, as part of our lunch, we have friends set the table. Lucas and Frannie set up a gorgeous display for us to enjoy. And with that, we ate and enjoyed each others company before we began afternoon activities

Capturing the RAINBOW

Beginning at lunch, children noticed the rainbows being created at the other end of the classroom. The children had different hypotheses for the phenomenon.

“I think the rainbows only do that (are visible) when it’s sunny - Lily
“I think they reflect off the windows and make tiny rainbows” - Wilder
“It’s not coming from the cracks (in the closet) -Lily
“It’s coming from the windows” - Wilder

After lunch, the children explored the light and dark materials which they used to create various ‘rainbow catchers.’

“There’s some on the floor. Look, we are going to catch a rainbow. Cape, we need your help to catch them.” - Wilder
“I think I know what the problem is! Rainbow materials need to be wet, not dry.” - Finlay
“A rainbow just came on my knee, but it didn't come in the rainbow catcher.’ - Cate

As the clouds block the sun, the rainbows disappear and children discuss whether their ‘rainbow catchers were successful.

I don’t see anymore rainbows - Lucas
“I think the rainbow catchers caught them all. I did a maze. There’s a gate so the rainbows can’t get out.” - Cate
I don’t think so - Lily
“Everyone! Unlock the sun to make more rainbows.” - Finlay
“The sun came back.” - Cate

Mixing Paints Together

LilyWhile some friends attempted to catch the ever changing rainbows in the room, others decided to mix paints together and create something new.

"I'm going to do green." - Jade
"It's starting to get greener and greener and green." - Cape
"Black and yellow make dark green." - Jade
"This is turning muddy." - Frances
"I like that color. That's a nice brown." -Lily
