Today's blog will offer a quick summary of this week's work on the the school's birthday celebration.  Many of our investigations start with a conversation.  Here's the conversations from the two KW groups.
Wednesday, January 5        Rainey Room Children

Jill - Did you know that the school was having a birthday?
Finlay - I don't think the school can have a birthday.  Because it's not alive.
Lily - Because it's not a person.  Well, everything can have a birthday, but they have it in different ways.
Bea - It's like a celebration for the school.
Jill - How do you think the school can celebrate a birthday?
Bea - The school can have a birthday because you (indicating the people in the school) can celebrate for it.
Molly - How should we celebrate?
Bea - Like, clean the rooms!
Molly - How else could we celebrate the schools birthday?
Bea - Well, we could give it flowers. Like flowers for each room.  One for the Rainey Room, one for the Tucker Room, one for the Atelier, and one for the Brown Room.
   Luke - Dinosaurs!
Jill - So you think the school would like dinosaurs?
Luke - Yeah!  Because it (the school). told me it would like dinosaurs.  But not T-Rex.  Nice dinosaurs.
Jill - What could we do to help the school celebrate it's birthday?
Cape - Can we make a birthday cake for the school?
Wilder - Can we give it presents?  Maybe we can make it airplanes.
Lily - I think we should only do cake.
   Bea - Flowers, too.

What represents the school?  Is it the building or something else?  Cape thought about the sign in front of the school and set out to draw it.  He made the rectangle and the legs for the sign, but wasn't happy with his version of the ginkgo butterfly.  We'll keep trying!

Thursday, January 6          Tucker Room Children

Jill - Did you know that the school was having a birthday?
   Janie - It's on the 25th.  (Pauses). It's the 25th birthday.
Jack - It's weird, because the school's not living.
Lochie - If the school isn't alive, who picks out its birthday?
Jill - How do you think the school can celebrate its birthday?
Janie - It can just stay there.  (Indicating that the school can't really do anything to celebrate.)
Giacomo - When it was morning, in the normal school, I was talking with Elyse and we thought maybe the kids could get a cupcake or a cake.
Jill - What could we do to help the school celebrate?
George - We should celebrate my brother's birthday because it's in tow days.
Jordan - What would the school like?
George - A drawing.  It would have to be a giant drawing.
Giacomo - Maybe get the biggest paper in the school because the school is so big.
Jack - Or we would have to staple the papers together.
Lochie - Or we could get the big easel paper and tape them together.
Giacomo - What about a portrait of the school?

Later... while working with mosaic materials:
Giacomo - What if we got more wood and made a frame and glued the picture into the frame.  And decorated the frame.  (After further consideration). Maybe this (mosaic we are currently working on) could be the gift.
