It had been a while since we had gone on a field trip in our neighborhood and Grace had been asking to take a walk. Still thinking about the Rodarte exhibit and what had peaked our interest there,  we set out to explore the Georgetown storefronts. We suggested the children  look for interesting fashion and elements of design they were drawn to such as color, pattern, design, texture, materials, and technique (such as beading or embroidery.) As we went, we noticed Grace and Louise started posing similarly to the mannequins and Caleb joined in. Louise suggested a fashion runway in one storefront with a wide entryway. We went by the store Lou Lou and thought of our friend. Then, at another store, Louise announced, "This is my Louise store and these are my helpers Gino and Tina right there." Several times the children noticed signs and typography. Caleb read, "Pizza," and children associated letters with familiar names such as the letter T..."T for Tegan," "Or Tommy," "Or Tita!"

We invited the children to use photography to document what aspects of the found fashion they were drawn to. Caleb especially utilized the language of photography to communicate his interests. Check out the following photos to gain some insight into  the children's perspectives:

Also today: we worked on some special top-secret messages, Tegan made a flower out of paper towels, and we enjoyed some birthday treats from our friend, Sam. Happy Birthday and thank you for sharing even though you weren't in KW today, Sam!
