Happy New Year!

As you can see, we are running full steam ahead into the new year!

We are excited to start 2023 with our KW Crew!
This week, we will take a closer look at Small World.  We will not only observe the environments and scenarios that the children create, we will think about the big ideas that drive this ever-popular experience.  We will start with conversations.
Conversations can be tricky and it's important to start with good questions.  In the past, we have asked children what is special about this type of play.  Children have typically responded with, "We just like it."  Clearly, we need to make more thoughtful inquiries.  Here's the questions that we will start with this week.
   1. When you work in small world, it seems like you are creating a place and a story.  You are in charge of what happens.  Can you say more about that?
    2. It seems like you start with your own home or area, but then you sometimes join with others.  Can you tell me how that happens?  How do you agree on the story or what happens?
    3. Is the size important?  Is being so small special somehow?  Is it better than building big or just different?
    4. We've noticed that the stingray and otter are very important in small world?  What makes them special?  How did you decide/ know that they would be powerful and important?

We are eager to see what we learn in the coming weeks.  Feel free to ask your child about what makes small world special and share the responses with us.  We will share our conversations and observations in blog posts and on our hallway documentation board.

Light Table Collages

We have winter and snow on the brain, even though the temperatures are mild.  This week, we have winter-inspired materials in the message center and wintery collages on the light table.
