Writing and StoriesIt's a big week for literacy in KW. Children are in the process of dictating and writing a letter to update families on the name change process. From Stories to Books What makes a good story? Finlay - A good story is when there's a bad guy. Wilder - it makes a good story if there's something tricky, like a bad guys stealing the treasure. But the good guy always wins. Luke - A good story has kings and queens and horses and guards. The guards stop the bad guys. Lucas - I like scary stories. Several Others - I do, too! Saul - I do not like scary stories. Remy - I like chapter books. My favorites are "Ramona the Pest" and "Nancy Drew." The first Nancy Drew book is "The Secret of the Old Clock." Lily - My favorite is "The Penderwicks."
We have begun to turn our small world stories into books. This process requires careful thought by the children. How will the story begin and end? What happens in the middle? This formation and arrangement of elements in an orderly fashion is seriation. Seriation is an important concept in math as well as storytelling (for example, as children arrange things according to size).
Rug WeavingWeaving carpets for small world continued yesterday and today. Here's some of the things children said as they worked: Lucas - I'm making a carpet and the fluffy stuff on it is the carpet. I want blue for me and pink for Zoe because pink is her favorite color. I'm pretending it's going to turn into a bed. One side is a carpet and one side is a bed. Cal - Over, under, over, under. I can do it all by myself! Wilder - I like the fluffy stuff. Outdoor Fun!The weather has been so beautiful! We're really enjoying our outside time!
