On Monday, Cape and his mom LouLou surprised us outside on the front lawn. They joined us as our Mystery Readers for the day! Thank you, LouLou and Cape, for the fun books you read to us!
In the classroom we continued to explore a variety of scales with the digital microscope and the projector. This time we investigated the scales on butterfly wings, a pine cone and a snake. In addition to taking photos with the digital microscope, we documented our observations by using paint, makers and watercolor.
These are all the colors that we want for our dragon. - Hugh
Today, the children found the materials we had chosen for our dragon body spread out in the classroom.
It's super long. - Daniel
It's a dragon! - Bea
The round green thing is the belly. - Jade
During a closer investigation, Remy noticed letter beads on one of the scales and said "I see his name."
Her observation made us think about possible names for our dragon costume.
Remy: Let's think together.
Hugh: Mhh... I don't know.
Sam: Yes. It's kinda hard.
Jade: Maybe someone can help you.
Jade: Maybe Draggy Fire.
Bea: Draggy Dragon Fire!
The length of the dragon raised the question if we could all fit in it.
In order to investigate this question we all tried to find a space on it and we came to the conclusion that yes, it is long enough to fit all of us! Yay!
Another observation by Remy about our dragon costume started a conversation about the dragon's head.
Remy: Oh, we forgot the mouth!
Jade: The head!
Daniel: What is gonna be the fire?
Jade: Yeah, let's make the head.
Hugh: Get a fabric. A round fabric and sew it here (pointing to the end of the costume)
Jade: No, I think it should be a triangle with a round on it. Like an oval on top to be the head.
Hugh: And also we don't want our dragon to be bad. To look bad.
After thinking of possible ideas, shapes, features and details for the head, we created designs for it with markers and water color.
This is the dragon (blue maker) and this is the fire (orange marker) and this line (orange line) connects the dragon with the fire. But you can't see it!
It has to be a triangle.
This is grass (green marker). If the dragon falls it can get on this little piece of grass.
All this red is the fire (red water color).
I'm making ears. And hair 'cause I see hair up top and horns sticking out.
And these are teeth, the dots and I made more dots to decorate it.
And sticks to hold it up.
I tried all kinds of eyes. I just want them to look different. Some have dots inside. This does not. They're round.
It's a dragon hand (in the center of the painting) because I noticed they have hands.
That is the mouth and fire is coming out. And horns coming out. This has one horn.
Big dragon eyes.
(making red paint dots) It's all dragon eyes.
Eyes and mouth (two dots with dotted line underneath). It's horns. For fighting. (zigzag line on top left)
