Rainey Room

I blow out candles!

Today we celebrated our friend, Michael!

It was another super fun Friday at St. Johns for Brown Room friends.

We were all really looking forward to our birthday celebration for our friend Michael.
Since this was the second birthday celebration we've had in the Brown Room, some of us had some expectations for how the day would go. Lily remembered that there would more than likely be a special snack included in the celebration! She said, "It's Michael's birthday, so he brought the snack. Like when Finlay brought the snack."
When we gathered in the classroom, Michael immediately noticed a photo of his birthday celebration at home placed in the center of our snack table in the studio. He said, "I blow out candles!" as he looked at the photo of himself at home in front of his birthday cake.
Then, Wilder and Lily went into the classroom to see if the birthday candle was setup like it had been when we celebrated Finlay's birthday. It was! Wilder excitedly asked,
"Can I blow it out this time?"
Even though we very much so appreciated his enthusiasm, he understood when we told him that Michael would be the one to extinguish the candle on his celebration day. We think it's safe to say that birthday celebrations are an enjoyable experience in the Brown Room and many children are looking forward to when they can have their own special celebration day. Some have even chose their "birthday color" months in advance!

Photos from our celebration.

After the celebration, the birthday child is able to open his/her birthday box on our classroom birthday calendar where they find a small representation of their birthday message inside.

How does a birthday message become so beautiful?

Cape decides that he will make a snowman.

Lucas wants to help and adds "buttons" using a funnel to poke holes in the pile.

After some time collecting enough sand to make a large "snow" pile...

Cape: Time to saw!
(smooshing & sawing the pile with his shovel)
No snow! It's Halloween!

Sam: Oh no, it's melting!

Lucas: I'm sitting on a chilly snowman. I'm a silly boy!
We hope you all have a very fun weekend!
