Exploring Transparent Collage

Over the course of this Brown Room year we’ve explored collaging with a variety of materials. In the beginning of the year we collaged  portfolio tags using warm and cool materials and explored metallic collages on cardboard bases. Today we used our same skills to collage with transparent materials at the light table, but these transparent collage bases had an extra special twist!

“It’s like Mimi’s photo” said Fay looking at the light table, and she was right! We took Mimi’s tracing of the school door, shrunk it, and printed it on transparent paper. Then we loaded the light table up with all kinds of blue and white see-through materials and invited the children to collage onto the St. John’s school door. ​

Some children chose to focus their attention and materials on the blue door alone, while others explored the frame and windows around the door.

Ford: I can do all of this? The door? The window?
Fay: I like the window, I’m going to do that part. 
Ragnar: I want the door to be blue, I gotta make it blue. I’m going to use all of these (blue tissue paper)
Ramsey: My door is blue. 
Fay: I’m making a silver door and a blue door.

​Ford and Fay also chose to help Win with her collage long after the two of them were done with their own. Fay helped to rearrange the materials on the table, particularly the most popular blue transparent paper  saying “I can put this in the middle to share so anybody doesn’t smash it!”, and Ford encouraged using a diversity of materials remarking “ I showed her (Win) all the materials!”

Ford also helped to take some of the photos (including the one to the right), and he made sure to focus the children and their work in the photos before he “pushed the button”.

All these beautiful collages and more will be hung up for display this Friday during our school birthday celebration!
