To Catch a Rainbow

"I have an idea. Maybe with this one." -Maxon
The phenomenon of a  rainbow or color spectrum has been capturing our interest since the beginning days in the Rainey Room.

"I think I caught it! I caught the rainbow! Ta-da!" -Giacomo
So how to catch it??
How to catch a rainbow and other wonderings about the visual experience of seeing slices and patches of color in the room. These images showcase a  follow up, carry over, and more is yet to come exploration  of the impromptu ways that Giacomo and Maxon self-initiated catching "the rainbow."

This occurred on a sunny morning the day after Jordane and I had rearranged and enhanced the classroom environment (see end of blog).
Can a rainbow be caught??

The Environment as a Third Teacher: Rearranging the Classroom

The first two images below show the classroom as it was for the first month of school. As the children are becoming increasingly more settled into their classroom environment and school routine, their work, exploration, and ideas have become more expansive.

The Initial Arrangement of the Morning Meeting Area

The environment in its layout and design, in combination with the materials in the physical space,  support new ways of seeing and interacting. This in turn works in relationship with the children's initial and ongoing explorations with new stimuli and added complexity.

Our Initial Projection for the Year Ahead

Picture
Yearly projections often find their own path as the children work and play together in relationship with their physical environment and the facilitated support of their adult teachers.

An Adapted Arrangement of the Morning Meeting Area

While the projections are thoughtful and intentional the ability to remain flexible and adaptive are integral to the approach and execution of our quotidian work and relationships.

A More Current and Connected Projection for the Year

As the days have turned to weeks and the weeks are becoming months, our yearly  projection has morphed.  It is likely that when the months become a new year, our projection will exhibit yet another evolving configuration of the work.

We are finding that our initial connections are manifesting in more of a Venn diagram fashion. Our collective interests and work, in which we are creatively and cognitively engaging, have current and potential overlap. Meanwhile, we are still adjusting and adapting to being at school and developing social-emotionally.

More to Come!
