Rainey B :  MAKING A CLOUD

"We made a snow cloud. We went up and down with wire."-Lucia

The idea of making a cloud came alive this week. With the shift from sunny days to an overcast sky, Giacomo and Maxon voiced thoughts about clouds and the absence of the rainbow(s) on the wall.

"The rainbows gone. Oh no! ...Behind the rain clouds." -
Maxon

Melanie asked the children, "What if we had a cloud? What if there was a cloud here (pointing in the direction of the window and ceiling)? ... What if we made a cloud?" Today we took on the creative challenge and let the snowfall inspire us.

Getting started with a long stretch of wire to create the frame and shape for our cloud.

EXPLORING THE MATERIALS

"This can wrap around here..." -Giacomo
Giacomo chooses to wrap twine around the wire cloud frame. But, first a knot has to be tied around the wire. With  persistence Giacomo succeeds in tying the knot!

Then comes the chicken wire to help give our cloud more structure and form.

What followed was an awareness of two separate cloud parts: the wire frame and the chicken-wire armature. The idea followed  to connect the two. How to do it?

Use a thinner gauge, lighter weight wire, in a thread like way, to attach the chicken wire "cloud bumps"to the wire frame. By the end of the day, we had a completed cloud structure! It just needs to be filled out with "white puffy things."

Stay tuned for more on our cloud!
We hope to have a gallery walk on Friday morning.
