At the Easel!

Picture
While painting at the easel today, children had the opportunity to explore a palette of  pastel colors. Children painted on large easel paper and some chose to spread paint over their entire page, while other chose to only use a small portion of the paper.

Isabelle: I got this. This and this and this. Why paint in here? (pointing into the jar). I making for daddy. I making picture for Mafe. Mafe pick up me. Almost done.
Ellie swirled her brush on the paper, “Pink!”
Mimi: “I’m painting the moon again,” as she layered pink paint over orange in sweeping circles. She had painted "the moon" earlier in the week as well, but on her painting today she added some more details:  “That’s a ghost,” pointing to a bright pink stroke. “I want pink. I have pink bag.”
Cal: How mine looks? For my friends. It can dry.
Emma: I gonna use purple. I gonna paint there (pointing at the blank easel paper).

Cutting Paper

Also in the studio, our Wednesday, Thursday, Friday friends had their first opportunity of the school year to explore working with scissors to cut. Mimi and Cal, who had practiced cutting earlier in the week were excited to share this work with their friends today. They were joined by Emma, Isabelle, and Louisa.

Mimi: I cut this. I made a boat.
Louisa:Yay! I did it. I can’t use the sharp scissors at home because I’m little.
Cal: Open. Close.
Emma: I did it (when cutting). I want the green one (pointing to green scissors). She invited Isabelle to sit with her: Next to Isabelle.
Isabelle folded the paper that she cut and handed it to Emma, who replied, "I have not hands!" because she was busy using her hands to cut.

Explorations with the Digital Microscope

Picture
Previously, children had a chance to explore natural materials, such as dried sea sponges and fabrics with varied textures. Today, children explored classroom objects under magnification with the digital microscope. Cal was especially intrigued by a seed pod,  which he also discovered made a very interesting sound when shaken, while Fay was interested in getting a closer look at some of our construction materials.
