Clay BeadsWe've reached the end of our clay beads project! It began by carefully forming beads from clay. After the drying and firing process, the children were able to paint their beads. And today, the children strung their beads into necklaces! There was only one decision left... Who will wear the necklace?? My lovie - Audrey, Lucas, Nora, Jack, Aida, Frannie Me - Fawzia, CC, Violet, Remy Maisie - Finlay We'll have to wait and see to hear what Sylvie, Maxon, Elle, and Cape decide to do with their necklaces. Hand SewingAlso in the studio, we began our exploration of hand sewing. Children had the opportunity to sew on a frame, adding beads, pieces of beautiful fabric, and buttons. Some thoughts on sewing: I'm doing what Sam taught me. I'm putting this (thread) through the second button hole. - Aida (using Sam's tips for making the button stay on the fabric.) I'm going to put it in my room because it's so beautiful! - Remy I'm putting mine in my mom and dad's room. - CC In the Outdoor ClassroomWe fell victim to the mercies of the postal system today... Our package did not arrive in time for us to tie-dye! We hope to get started tomorrow, so come dressed to get messy! Even though we weren't able to tie-dye, we still made the most of our time outside.
See you tomorrow for our last WATER DAY!!

Our last WATER DAYToday we enjoyed our last water day for Session II of summer camp! Especially Skye enjoyed running through the sprinklers. Virginia, Fay and Whit were busy cleaning the construction vehicles in our car wash area and Ragnar experimented with catching water in small and large buckets from the sprinklers and water slide.
CLAY As we are reflecting on our time at summer camp, we continue to revisit some of our favorite explorations this week. Today we focused on CLAY! While some friends worked with clay for the first time today, Ramsey, Fay and Soren used glaze to finish up previously fired clay projects. The pink glaze will turn transparent in the next kiln firing. Glazing our clay cookies "You have to cut it like this. And then you need to hammer it. I'm gonna cut it right here so it turns into a bottom. It's a monster in a bottom. It's not a monster. I think it might be sculpture. Watch it!" - Virginia
Virginia experimented with rolling small amount of clay between her palms to create small balls. She then continued to flatten them with a mallet and stacked them on top of each other. "I'm rolling it with my hand. I did it!" - Virginia Finishing Up Project WorkBecause it's our last week at camp, in addition to new explorations this week we will also be finishing up some previously started project work. Clay BeadsLast week while working with clay, many of us created clay beads. The beads dried, were fired in the kiln, and were ready to be personalized today! We used acrylic paint to add a rainbow of colors to our beads. Check out how our unique individuality and creativity shines through these beautiful creations! Those beads are so beautiful, CC! - Elle I haven't painted in a long time, but I'm really good at it. - CC If our beads are dry tomorrow, we will string them into necklaces, bracelets, decorations, or a keychain (suggested by Elle). Speaking of a rainbow of colors, please don't forget to send in a white article of clothing for our |
Water Spray Painting Today, in a twist on water painting, we experimented with "water spray painting." The children created bubbles of water on paper using a spray bottle and then tapped them with paint brushes, watching with fascination as the paint traveled almost instantaneously throughout the water bubbles. | Caleb creates a death star during today's water spray painting. |
You can just roll the clay into a flat pancake and lift the sides up. - Sylvie You need to pinch on the sides. - Nora As a group, we further discussed techniques we might use to create our pots and also shared some examples of pinch pots that have been created by teachers during a clay workshop in the past. |
CC had some excellent words of wisdom for her friends Violet and Audrey who had joined the clay table after CC had already spent time practicing her technique. When Violet and Audrey seemed a bit hesitant about how to begin their work, CC said, "You'll get good at it!" Sometimes trying something new can be intimidating, but with a little encouragement we can create something beautiful! |
