Hi families! Today there will be no blog because it's the last Friday of the month, which means it's time for all teachers and staff at St. John's to spend time cleaning up the school. Have a great weekend and see you Monday!

Introducing Birthday Gifts, Committees, and Calendars
Today we introduced some documentation to the children. We showed them a panel highlighting relationships and a 'book' about loose parts. Parents are invited to browse documentation (alone or with your child) during the morning drop-off. Throughout the year we will continue to update/change documentation. At this early stage, not all children are represented yet, but will be eventually. MOMENTS FROM THE DAY:Clay SnowmenOutsideEllie learns a new skill: climbing on the structure to swing from the red bar: Palmer pushes Grace on the swing: Lane initiated an imaginative group play on the playground. Here are some sound bites from the experience: Lane: Guys, there's a dragon! Emilia: Rawr! Rawr! Ada: I'm a princess. Lane: You're Ana and I'm Elsa. Melanie: Are you a dragon or a princess, Emilia? Emilia: Rawr! Lane: Hey! DRAGON!! Dragon! Oliver: Hey! Eeeeeeeeee! Eeeeeee! I see you guys. Eeeeeeeee! Emilia: Rawr! Ada: I saw a dragon behind the castle. It's blue and humongous! At MeetingOliver noticed some children sitting on adults' laps. He invited Fletcher come sit on his lap:
Meanwhile, Emilia builds several tall towers using a variety of shapes of blocks.
The St. John's values are: relationships, joy, creativity and exploration. These can be observed throughout the day; here's a peek at today's examples: RELATIONSHIPSJOYCREATIVITYEXPLORATIONWhile outside, Oliver discovered a gong. He alerted his peers and soon, Ellie, Wolf and Cannon were exploring it as well.
Did you notice how some photos 'fit' into more than one value? Joy, relationships, exploration and creativity are interconnected. {that is why some photos are in more than one section of the blog today!} Thanks again to Michelle and Laura for organizing last night's potluck. It was fantastic to visit with everyone a bit more. Special thanks to Laura and Stephen for opening up their home for the occasion. The year is off to an excellent start!
Snack provides an opportunity to get to know one another. The conversation around the snack table this morning provided some insight into how the children are learning about/connecting with one another, as well as their teachers. We were talking about how it is possible to change the lyrics to "Do You Know the Muffin Man," replacing Muffin Man with other people or places. Replacing Muffin Man with Grocery Store was the catalyst for a conversation: Oliver, "I want to go to the grocery store." Melanie, "What do you get at the grocery store?" Grace, "Almonds! And pops. I like caramel!" Addressing Melanie, Ada inquired, "Do you go to the grocery store?" Melanie replied, "Yes. Who else does?" Emilia chimed in, "Me!" Ada added, "I go to the grocery store with my mom." Lane noted, "I go with my mommy to the grocery store when we don't have any more cheese." Ada reflected, "I really like cheese." We asked Palmer if he went to the grocery store. He confirmed that he did. When we asked him what he got there, he replied, "I look at the cars and stuff, like around the corner." We also asked Wolf if he went to the grocery store and what he got there. He shared with us that he buys, "cheese!" (with a big smile on his face) Here are some images that capture relationships forming: through play, shared experiences and conversations.....
As children begin the process of getting to know each other, we are starting to see connections being made. Here, Olivia and Evelyn sing the ABC's as they wash their hands. Many children found the photo albums after snack and gathered as a group to look closely at their own as well as others'. Lane showed us a picture of the "bat-mobile" in her album, as well as her family members. Olivia asked, "What's her name?" as she looked at a picture of Grace and her baby sister.
We read" Where the Wild Things Are" before spending some time outside and heading home.
Because our staff meetings are on Mondays, there will not usually be a journal posted on any Monday - except on special occasions like birthdays. Thank you, and see you again tomorrow!
The second half of the Brown Room friends came to school today. We enjoyed a variety of activities: PaintingWhen Grace decided to add some collage elements, Oliver offered to help by bringing her materials.
