The last Friday of each month, our staff takes time in the afternoon to clean up and organize the school, especially in the Tucker closet where most of our art materials are.
Thanks for making it out to the potluck on Wednesday - it was great chatting with you!!! Have a fantastic weekend. Love, Melanie & Brooke

Re-establishing our familiarity with Clay, Day 2 Wolf M: I'm going to make a ball. Emilia: I'm going to make a ball leading a ball. Wolf M: Look at me, I'm doing a walking town. Fletcher: Look, I made a big tall... it's a big snake. Olivia: Look, I made a squirrel. Fletcher: I'm making a tall building. I'm making it flat so it won't fall down. I squish it. (he presses down with his finger) Palmer: I'm making a train track. Evelyn: I wanna make an eggie. Olivia: I wanna make a unicorn egg. Palmer: Here are all the planes and trains and cranes. (They begin thumping the clay flat with hands as a group) Ellie: Maren and I are working alone. Maren: We're making a big cookie. (later) Now we're making a snowman. Ellie: Snowmen are easier. Oliver: I'm making a baby monster. Construction Projects: "Chocolate Factory" (See captions for details) Other Moments from our Day... (Including a visit from Brown Room!!)
A number of projects were underway in the Rainey Room today. Many friends enjoyed working with clay for the first time this school year. Today's focus was thinking about what we could create out of clay and also "getting our hands dirty" to refresh our memories around how to work in this language. Clay will continue to be the focus of our studio work this week. While they were working with clay, the children noticed the difference in texture: some of the clay was quite wet and mushy while other pieces were drier and therefore less malleable: Oliver: It's a little bit easy. Cannon: This one is not easy. Wolf: This is hard right here (pointing). Photographs supported the children's work. Cannon and Grace were each creating an alligator, and after studying the image, they made revisions: Cannon: This is the body. Grace: This is the mouth. Those are his big teeth. Maren: It looks like a model of that (indicating the photograph). Emilia and Palmer undertook the task of making a sign for the message center. Palmer diligently wrote out each letter to create the sign and Emilia drew some people so that "people know they can come here." Here are some other photos from the day: paper sculpture, painting and outside play We look forward to seeing you tonight at the potluck! At morning meeting, we talked about some X-rays that were sitting on the light table. What does an X-ray show? Where are bones in the human body?
Ironing Symbols onto our Cubby Bags!
A few more moments from our day... This morning we delivered the messages for the new Brown Room friends. The children reflected on how these messages would make the new Brown Room children feel, "happy." Today the children finished working on their summer experience collages. Fletcher worked on train tracks, Olivia added gems, Oliver incorporated representation for "Baby Eena" (his favorite stuffed giraffe). The bottom right shows Emilia's finished collage. She drew her dad, cut him out and glued him on. Outside the group of children interested in the fairy house had lots of questions and ideas. Grace: If we leave the fairies one present, maybe they will leave us two! But where can we get presents? Lane: Magic dust? (a present idea) Later, the group spent a long time cleaning the fairy house. Lane: Let's make it shinier so the fairies will come. Maren: If we do it long (scrub), then it will be clean. Grace: Are you cleaning with water? Emilia: Yeah, just grab a sponge. Here are some more moments from the day: Summer Memory Collages Our progress so far representing happy memories with paper, fabric, sand, and 3D materials. *Note: Please hover your mouse over the photo to read the caption and get more detail! Events from the Classroom ... including a lot of doctor play! And a follow-up on the fairy house. Whether they are indoors or out, the Rainey Room friends are hard at work! During Backwards Day, many friends continued yesterday's project to design and construct a fairy house. There was also exploration with bubbles, building, digging, swinging and dramatic play. Bubbles! After enjoying some snack in the Rainey Room, the children dove back into their recent work: making welcome messages for the new Brown Room children and working with materials to reflect on our summer adventures. Upon finishing a message for his friend, Jack, Fletcher reflected, "Jack's gonna love this!" Then Cannon looked at his message for Reed and said, "I think Reed's gonna like it." Summer Memories Work Here's just a small handful of other moments from the day. Summer Memories Project Thank you for sending in your photos!! Your children have been using them to think back to their experiences with water. In the atelier, they are using collage materials to represent these memories. "My water is blue", said Palmer. "My water is blue, too," said Fletcher. "Oh this is the double rainbow picture," said Emilia as she looked back at her photos. Olivia, "There's me at the beach and there's Daniel. There's a picture of me eating lunch with my water bottle. The water (ocean) was so duper cold. The sun was coming on the water." Messages for the new Brown Room children In order to welcome the Brown Room children to our school, we made messages addressed to Cedar, Maxon, George, and other newcomers. In the images below, you can see how exciting it was to deliver the messages to the recipients. Some people were absent today, so we put their mail in the mailbox. In these first two weeks of school, a lot of our time has been spent getting comfortable at school with our peers in this new classroom.
This morning was our first Sing-a-long in Blake Hall. It was so wonderful to be able to welcome more parents and caregivers to be a part of this tradition. Afterward, during morning meeting, the children unwrapped and explored some of the instruments that were made by parents during the Spring New Parent Orientation event. These will be incorporated into Sing-a-long soon. Later, two small groups visited the new, all-school Atelier. Last year, that room was used by Tucker Room, but this year it has been repurposed. The first part of the visit was observing what materials were in the space. The children noticed, screws, buttons, shells, glue, tape, hot glue, bottle caps and keys amongst the many materials.
Both groups spent time exploring the Gelatos. One group also tried some other writing and drawing tools too. Palmer made an astute observation about the new tools, "You don't know what you like until you try new things. You have to try new things." Here are some other moments from the day:
