Spooooooky Atelier! In the atelier, Tucker Room teachers Lisa and Rachael created a very spooky environment with plenty of creepy shadow puppets, finger puppets, blacklights, glow-in-the-dark paints, dark sparkly sand, and haunted watercolors. Lane: This is SO spooky. Grace: It's so spooky because it's Halloween. Fletcher: It looks so spooky in here. Work Continues on the Fairy Village... Wolf B: "Maybe there can be a sidewalk for the fairies to walk on. They can't walk on the road or they will get squished by a car." More quotes are embedded within the captions of the gallery below... HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

We want to thank everyone again for the wonderful attendance last week at Classroom Stories Night. It was wonderful to share some of the learning and hear your ideas on how we can extend the work. A few of your suggestions have already started coming to fruition and we wanted to highlight them here! Doctor Play Leads to Measuring During Classroom Stories Night, Danica suggested that one way we might explore the concept of height was by having the children lie down and measure their bodies. On Friday, Alexandra and Fletcher collaborated to measure a long chain he had created: On Monday, we used photos of that experience as inspiration. After showing the children what Alexandra and Fletcher had done, a small group decided to try something similar. Because they had built such long 'cube trains' to measure we decided to compare the cubes to the lengths of their bodies. During Classroom Stories Night, we also discussed measuring the children's feet. Laura lent us her shoe measure device and today we began exploring the size of our feet. We measured, put a sticker of our shoes sizes and made footprints. More friends will have an opportunity to continue this work tomorrow. Also related to measuring and Classroom Stories Night, the children have been exploring parents' heights. After further reflection, we have been contemplating how to make the parents' heights more "readable" for the children. More on that soon! Fairy Village Work Many of the friends contributed to converting the fairy houses into a village. Olivia, Emilia, Grace, Alexandra, Lane and Fletcher all participated today. There was so much incredible problem-solving, negotiating, and innovating. We ran into a lot of trouble with how to fit the furniture into the house - we'll keep you posted on any solutions we might find tomorrow. Olivia: This can be the locker that keeps the door like this. Emilia: But we need a chimney. (Olivia begins pushing furniture through a small door. Grace puts a carpet on the roof but Emilia asks her to move it for the chimney. It keeps tumbling off so they decide against it.) Emilia: This is where we can keep our soap and towels! (is holding a small dresser) Olivia: I'm just trying to get this in the house. (She pushes the bed in through the door) I don't know... what to... Alexandra: I know what to do! (She finds smaller furniture that will fit better) Emilia: This can be the dinner table. But where do I put it? There's no more spaces. Oh.... A pinecone! I've been needing one for a fairy house. There's a spider on it. Do fairies eat spiders? Alexandra: Guess what Melanie? They cook on the roof! (she has placed kitchen furniture up on the roof) Emilia: Guys I found coasters. Grace: We're running out of room!! :( Alexandra: How bout, they can use this for a mixing bowl. (she is holding a nut shell that Wolf B brought from the farm) Emilia: This hangs down so when the raindrops come from the sky, they come floating down. (Olivia has begun making a "playground" and puts out square blocks "where they can jump. Fletcher joins our group, and he uses a "table" Palmer made as a car with 5 seats. He makes a long road.) Fletcher: And now they're starting the car! They're gonna find the treasure and bring it back home. This is where the home lives. They're gonna go to the smokey place, where the bears live!! ... It's just a story. :) Alexandra: If you tape the tiles to here, they can get across. It's a clubhouse fairy house. (she creates the pathway with popsicle sticks, then Fletcher helps her tape it in place) Fletcher: Now they can go back home. (Fletcher has made a ramp on his road.) Alexandra: This is perfect for a path because you can just go under it. (She has a tall semicircle block) And.... we had a Mystery Reader! Thanks William! Happy 4th Birthday, Evelyn!!
Pumpkin Party! Wolf Baillie's family was so generous to let us come over for a pumpkin party today! We carved and painted spooky jack-o-lanterns with the help of several helpful chaperones (Thanks again to Jennifer K, Jess B, Betina, Mandy, Lizanne, Laura, Nana, Sarah, Eliza, Jecca and Aga!). We got to work with a variety of tools to scoop out the inside pulp/seeds and create a face. Like Cannon mentions below, one fun part was hitting a metal stencil with a rubber mallet to create eyes, mouths, and noses.
Palmer: I liked carving the pumpkin with Fletcher's family. Cannon: I liked to hit the holes in with Maren's mom. And I liked mommy's help. Oliver: I liked carving with my mommy. Wolf B: I liked taking all the shapes out of my pumpkin. We mentioned the pulp on the inside - how we had to scrape it out. Grace: I even helped, with my hands. Palmer: (It's) the seeds to grow other pumpkins.
Fairy house progress!
We can't wait to see you TOMORROW NIGHT at Classroom Stories! Please check your email for a reminder about the potluck sign-up. We will eat/drink/work on activities starting at 6:30pm, then begin our video presentation at 7:30.
It was very busy in the Rainey Room today! Two main activities that were taking place were doctor play and fairy house construction. For today, doctor play was moved to the middle room and that area of the classroom was devoted for fairy house work. A few of the children were keen to write down their phone numbers in case the fairies want to give them a call. Doctor play in the Middle Room was also very productive. Having a quiet space enabled groups to stay focused on their play for over 30 minutes without interruption or distraction. A lot of video footage was taken and we look forward to sharing some clips during our upcoming Classroom Stories Night. Have a wonderful weekend!
A visit from the amazing Doctor Daniel!!
Palmer: Doctor Daniel... Why do you have to do exercise? Dr Daniel: Who has muscles? This is a strong class for sure. Our heart is actually a special type of muscle, and it's responsible for getting blood everywhere in our body that needs blood. In order for your heart to get strong just like your muscles do, that's what exercise does, it helps your heart get strong. Cannon: Why do you drink juice when you're sick? Oliver: When you're coughing you drink juice. Dr Daniel: You don't HAVE to drink juice when you're sick, but sometimes it makes you feel better. Sometimes if the juice is orange juice, it helps get some of the yucky mucus out of your throat. Evelyn: What about... medicine? Dr Daniel: Sometimes you might take medicine if you have an ear infection, or a fever. You don't have to take medicine every day, but if your body needs help feeling better, then medicine can help.
In the slideshow below, see several other moments from our day, including some work we've been doing on a new fairy house made of cardboard and tape. Rain cut our backwards day short, but it was still a wonderful day! Did you know that fairies like jam? In an effort to attract fairies to visit the fairy house Ellie, Emilia, Lane and Grace started making jam. They cut strawberries, measured sugar and lemon juice and mixed it together. Tomorrow other children will work to cook it down on the stove. While that was happening, other children were busy in the classroom playing the doctor area, building, doing puzzles and much more. Below are a few highlights! Maren, Olivia, Evelyn and Gigi worked on a kite to be used as decoration for the Book Fair. Wolf and Wolf explored height in the doctor play area. Fletcher and Alexandra worked together on puzzle. Cannon, Palmer and Oliver were busy in construction, but unfortunately no photos were taken of their great work! Oliver built and castle and Cannon and Palmer collaborated on an "animal house." The day ended with a Mystery Reader! Thank you to Christine for reading so many wonderful books today! And a big thanks to the whole Rainey Room community for helping celebrate my 40th birthday!
Book Fair preparation: Kite making! The theme of our book fair this year is "Let's Go Fly a Kite". Victor came during morning meeting to show us how to construct the base of a kite with wood and string. We wondered, how are kites normally made? Grace: You put the string on it and you color it in. It flies up in the air. Maren: With the wind. Lane: What if we made a kite with dots on it... rainbow dots. Victor compared the sizes of wood with an existing kite. He said, "You see this one is too long right?" He brought out a new tool: a saw. Palmer: You can saw it! (Palmer then stepped up to hold the wood while Victor sawed through) Victor then began to carefully wrap the strings around and around the wood. We thought about other things we wrap. Oliver: It's like a present. Lane: It's like a bow in your hair. Victor gets out the hot glue gun to seal the string to the surface of the wood. Olivia: We have to glue it right on the middle of here. Palmer: That tool will make the glue. Grace: Be careful Victor. Because the hot glue is hot. Only adults use hot glue. Olivia: Little kids can use it but they can't touch it because it's hot. Oliver: If you touch it Victor, it might be too hot. Doctor Play: How tall are you? Puzzles and construction... Cannon: This is a house for the gorillas.
There was a lot of fun happening today in the Rainey Room! The children worked on threading ribbon into their fired clay pieces. They turned out beautifully. While he was working Cannon made a great connection when he asked, "Is this sewing?" He recognized that this activity mirrors sewing, but instead of thread and fabric, the children used ribbon in clay slabs. In the classroom, many other things were happening. Doctor play was very busy and next week's visit with pediatrician, Dr. Daniel, will certainly help inform the play and answer some of children's questions. When looking at Pam, the children were wondering about the heart. Upon further inspection, Gigi noted, "I think this kind of looks like fire." Building on her idea Oliver said, "Yellow's fire. Maybe red is ketchup." Here are a few other images from the day: Have a wonderful weekend!
