Reviewing our Portfolios!

As the end of the year gets closer, children are examining the work they made this year in preparation for Portfolio Conferences.  During these Conferences, children show their parents all the hard work they have accomplished in drawing, painting, and other media.

As Lane looked through her portfolio today, she knew part of the objective is to sort the work into folders.  She said, "Let's put the paintings in the dark blue, and drawings in the light blue."

As part of our research into the sweet potato, we watched a video of how to encourage the potato to sprout "roots" and "shoots". 

Ada: Shoots are words for leaves.
Palmer:  No, they’re not the leaves.  The leaves are not the shoots.
Lane:  But shoots mean parachutes.  Like inside it, it has to grow.
Alexandra:  Why does the potato grow out leaves?  I do not know!!
Palmer: Melanie, let’s ask the person why’s it growing leaves.

We discussed how roots allow the plant to drink up the water.  One of our radishes is using its roots to suck up water from the jar below.

Melanie:  The plant is trying to get to the water.  It’s drinking it up.
​Grace:  Like persons.
Palmer:  Like elephants.
Alexandra: Maybe he wants to drink all of it!
