A number of projects were underway in the Rainey Room today. Many friends enjoyed working with clay for the first time this school year. Today's focus was thinking about what we could create out of clay and also "getting our hands dirty" to refresh our memories around how to work in this language. Clay will continue to be the focus of our studio work this week. While they were working with clay, the children noticed the difference in texture: some of the clay was quite wet and mushy while other pieces were drier and therefore less malleable: Oliver: It's a little bit easy. Cannon: This one is not easy. Wolf: This is hard right here (pointing). Photographs supported the children's work. Cannon and Grace were each creating an alligator, and after studying the image, they made revisions: Cannon: This is the body. Grace: This is the mouth. Those are his big teeth. Maren: It looks like a model of that (indicating the photograph). Emilia and Palmer undertook the task of making a sign for the message center. Palmer diligently wrote out each letter to create the sign and Emilia drew some people so that "people know they can come here." Here are some other photos from the day: paper sculpture, painting and outside play We look forward to seeing you tonight at the potluck!
