As part of our exploration of new materials in the Brown Room, we have been trying a new watercolor method this week: Eye droppers!  We have found that it is a great way to mix different colors together.  On the fabric surface, the paint reacted differently than on paper.  The process of using eye droppers sparked conversation and instilled pride in children as the paint was successfully pulled into the dropper and then squeezed back out.
Eye Dropper Conversation #1

Lane: I just got a bubble.
Maren:  Now I want to do orange.
Grace: She's mixing colors.  It looks like brown.
Maren: I mixed colors.
Grace:  It mixed!
Melanie:  What does it look like now?
Grace:  Green.
Lane:  I squirt some water out!  I'm making sticky splats.
Evelyn:  (Mixes blue and orange)  It's green.
Grace: It mixed.  How do you make green?? (Asks Evelyn)
Maren: (Has green in her paint jar)  How you know how to mix colors, because you come over here and dip into the green and that makes green.
Eye Dropper Conversation #2

Olivia:  Watch this, Melanie.  (squeezes eye dropper high above fabric)
Alexandra:  I have a papa at home.
Fletcher:  (Sees pink paint on his hands)... Polar Express!  Polar Express!
Melanie:  Could we make a polar express train with colors?
Fletcher:  I'm gonna start over here.
(Emilia squeezes eye dropper successfully, Maren sees this)
Maren:  She squeezed!!!
(Olivia sees Fletcher making a polar express)
Olivia:  I can make one by myself.
Evelyn: I did it!

Continued Shadow Explorations...

Today we tried answering the question, "How can I make an object have a shadow?"  We used the little wooden people for this experiment.  Some had success, while others had difficulty at first finding which angle would produce a shadow.
Lane also turned the wooden person on their side to test what that shadow might look like.  "If we knock it over it could be so long."

Because our classroom was arranged differently today, we decided to have a picnic for snacktime!

Other Stories from our day...

After such a rainy day yesterday, it was great to get our feet moving outside.
