Pod BExploring the Digital MicroscopeYesterday and today, the children have been working with the digital microscope. As they investigate, children have been forming theories and making connections. "Everything is connected to everything" Fletcher(Photos from yesterday and today) Fletcher made the above comment as he noticed all the wires during take-part work yesterday. Today children used screwdrivers to open and disassemble technology. They were curious about what was inside and fascinated with what they found! Pod B enjoyed their full hour outside on this beautiful day!Pod A"Imagine if a leaf could be President!" Nora
Brooke: Let’s take it in a different direction. What if we in Pod A were going to vote. How would we do it? What does that mean to vote. Maren: It means like you vote what president you want. Brooke: If we were going to do, how would we do it in our class? Maren: We would agree on something. Lane: Like my mom says that me and Will have to watch a show that we agree on. Jill: So we’re voting for president, what does the president do. Palmer: They live in the White House. Brooke: What do they do? Cannon: They work at the White House. Jill: What kind of work? Lane: One time my mom told me that one time when Donald Trump went to work he dressed up. Maren: As what? Jill: You mean dressed up in fancy clothes or dressed up in a costume? Lane: Dressed up in fancy clothes. Cause like on the newspaper he has fancy clothes. Jill: Oh, like a suit. Maren: I know someone that has a wig like Donald Trump but I forget her name. Palmer: (referencing newspaper) She’s talking about Donald Trump cause that’s the guy in red (on the newspaper image.) Jill: Yes, he’s in the red area. And he’s the president right now. But if he goes to the office and says, ‘whoa I got some work to do today, I guess I better do my work.’ What is his work? What is he in charge of? What does he do? Palmer: He’s in charge of the country. Jill: What does he have to do for the country? Cannon: Make them happy. Brooke: How do you think the president makes the country happy? Cannon: Because the people make animals happy. Jill: So if his job is to make people happy or their lives better what could he do? Cannon: People take Indian elephants to the zoo? Palmer: And lots of people take care of animals, like if they’re sick they take them to a animal hospital. Jill: I see a lot of concern for animals. Brooke: Do you think that’s part of the president’s job, is to help protect animals? What else does the president do? Palmer: Reads newspapers. He makes newspaper even. Lane: He just prints out them. Palmer: Well the news is in the newspaper of what happens. Jill: Let’s go around the room, if you were president what is one thing you would want to do for the country? Gigi: I would want to help the plants and the animals. Cannon: Me too. Maren: Me too. Dakota: I would protect the animals when they get hurt. Cannon: Me too. Lane: I would take care of the world. Brooke: How do you think you would do that? Lane: (long pause) …That’s the question. Palmer: What I want to do for when I’m president is give people money who don’t have money. Maren: I would do what Palmer said. Jill: What would be your first step? Brooke: Or can you think of a problem that you’ve seen in the city that you would want to fix? Lane: Like one time in Wrightsville Beach, the power, the stop lights in the street and all the electricity went out. Palmer: Maybe if you see a piece of trash you should throw it out. Brooke: So maybe trash is a problem. Gigi: That’s called litter. Lane: Since my mom, sometimes Will’s gatorade little packers are like medium holes, so sometimes they wash up on the beach so she trims them so animals don’t get them stuck on their necks. Jill: Nora, if you were president for the country and you could do anything what would you do? Nora: I would make paintings. Jill: Is there a reason you would make paintings? Nora: Maybe we can hang up the paintings inside the White House. Also, I’ve been to the White House before. When I was little I went to the White House. But we didn’t get to go inside the White House. Jill: Sometimes the president - in addition with other people - makes the rules or makes some changes. Are there any new rules we should have? Palmer: We could make sure that no one fights about animals in this school. Cannon: Or we can protect this school by guarding it and surrounding it. Palmer: But we don’t have any guards at school. How are we going to protect it. Cannon: We are guards! We are guards! We are guards! Palmer: No, we’re children Cannon, that’s the point! Jill: Any other ideas for new rules for our country? Lane: This Corona! Jill: What should we do about that? What would you do if you were president? What would you do about Corona? Lane: Wash my hands a lot. Jill: Do you think the president has any chance to make Corona better? Lane: Well I have no idea, so ask someone else. Brooke: What do y’all think? Palmer: Maybe if he had some sort of fan he could blow the Corona virus away. Lane: How would you get a fan to blow it all over the world? All the states, all the countries. How would you get a fan like that? To every country and every state? Maren: We could have a potion. Jill: What would the potion do? Maren: The potion would get Corona away. Lane: So you would just put it on everyone’s body - all over their body - and all over the world in all the states and all the countries. Then the Corona will go away? I think that would take too long. Palmer: And maybe we could get a truck that has a SUUUUPPPER tall fan that can blow the Corona virus away. Maren: Or we could get a truck with a potion that could get rid of Corona, right? Palmer: Maybe we should have 2 trucks - a potion connected to the wind and one with the wind. Lane: So to make the potion we could probably just get some healthy foods to put in and then just chop them up and make them like as water- like healthy water - and then we’re gonna stir it up and then we could set a timer and it will tell us when to blast the potion out of the dump truck and it will just drop all over the world. Jill: I want you to finish this sentence: Our president should be _____.Something that you think is important for a leader. Palmer: Good. He should not hurt the people. Maren: Good. Lane: Kind. Dakota: Kind. Nora: I think he should be nice. Cannon: Animals! Like a badger, a beaver, a panda. Palmer: A leopard. Jill: It seemed like everyone knew who Donald Trump was. Does anybody know who the other guys is? (Showing the photo from the paper.) Who is the other choice? Gigi: I don’t remember his name but I do know he’s a choice. long silence…. Jill: It starts with /J/ Nora: Joe Biden! Sharing our school through a message
Animal DrawingsIt's well known the Tucker A loves animals. They always figure prominently in our outdoor and construction scenarios. Earlier this month, children met in small group to discuss their memory boxes. Many children noticed the animals in each other's collections. When we worked with clay earlier, there was a lot of interest in making clay animals. We started that process today by making careful drawings that will inform our clay process.
