Happy Birthday Violet!

Yesterday we celebrated Violet’s 4th Birthday! Joined by her family on Zoom, we celebrated with rice krispy treats, a birthday slideshow and even sweet pea lemonade! Everyone loved watching the blue sweet pea tea turn to pink once we added the acidic lemon. Wishing you a wonderful fourth year, Violet!

Reactions to the Lemonade:

CC: It (sweet pea tea) smells weird
Jack: They’re purple and green, they’re all dried up!
Lochie: It smells like flowers
CC: No, it smelled good.
Lochie: Yeah, it tasted sooo good
Violet: Mommy and me made this at home with Fletcher.
George: It tastes better than water!
Lochie: It doesn’t taste good on it’s own
Jack: We should go to the pool with our drinks.

Today we added details to our ocean mural to give the effect of moving water. Using the same technique from our earlier watercolor painting, we invited the children to add dots, swirls and metallic lines on our ocean. When we were finished, some children wanted to make drawings of sea creatures either to add to the mural or use as characters for storytelling. While working, the children offered reflection on the painting process:

CC: We could use sparkly paint.
Lochie: I’m making big dots
Marley: I’m making the sea
CC: It changes the sea when you put paint. If we put the sparkly part on top of the white thing then it changes the color.
Lochie: I want to make waves.
Marley: Look at my gold waves.
CC: When we put the gold paint over the white thing it changes to blue.
Elle: I know how to dazzle. I’m making pearls. The sparkles are the pearls.

Lochie: The ocean moves all the time.
CC: Waves make it move. This is how the ocean moves because of the waves.
Lochie: Currents make so big waves and they shine rainbows when they mix with the sun. Ginormous rainbows!
