What to expect when you’re expecting…. a fish?

Rainey Room A has some exciting news! To compliment our ocean explorations, we are getting a fish for the classroom! He or she will be joining us next week, and in anticipation of the fish’s arrival we discussed today where it might be best to set up the fish bowl.
Where to put our new fish?
Lochie: It needs to be a little bit light so maybe the light table? Or maybe on top of the moons? Maybe tape the fish bowl to the moons? No, maybe the light table is best.
Jack: I have many good spots at home, but not really at school. How about the name is CC because I named my fish CC.
George: I think he should be there (on the window sill)
Elle: Elena, I think there (on the shelf above the easel)
Lochie: But then we can’t get him. Maybe he should be low.
Elle: No, high
Jack: I think low
Lochie: Yeah so we can carry him around and feed him
Elle: Yeah, but I like to put my new animals up high
Violet: Just on the light table. I think that’s going to be light enough to light up.
Jack: Maybe we should just put the fish somewhere else, like here (shelf above the reading corner)

Our conversation about fish sparked another about who or what we’d be if we lived in the ocean!

CC: I want to be a mermaid
George: I want to be a shark
Jack: I want to be a catfish
Lochie: I want to be a merman, all the girls are going to be mermaids and I will be a merman, I can draw that.
Marley: I want to be a unicorn
Elle: I want to be a unicorn mermaid. They have rainbow hair, rainbow tail, and they are sparkling and shiny. They have hooves on their arms and a horn on their head.

Our nature light table has also inspired some school wide spring explorations. Using the digital photos and flowers from last week, Elena put together a spring exploration in the greeting hall for everyone to use.

Lochie: Let’s tell the other ones that its fun. Oooh the pictures have blue and purple
Jack: I notice that like it has blue and purple, and I use pink and some of purple. The next color I’m going to use is some the yellow, then blue. After the blue I’m going to repeat the pattern.
Marley: I’m making a rainbow
Jack: When you make a rainbow you have to use all the colors. I’m taking the pink off because I can’t draw on any part of it. I’m going to get a new pink.
Lochie: That’s not how I’m doing it.
