I'm Going to be the Teacher - Lucia"That looks easier. Can I try? - Sylvie Big shout out to the Keymer family for being amazing and supporting Rainey Room in our first woodworking experience this year! Thank you! This week we tried woodworking. Lucia was so excited to telling everyone about the tools and how to use them. Our first day, we tried working outside and learning how to use the tools. We tried different saws outside to see which one worked best "I'm going to put the saw back if you're not listening" - Lucia being stern about safety This was a wonderful experience where certain children got the opportunity to lead and elevate the learning. Instead of asking adults, Rainey Room children asked their peer for support. Lucia this (nail), bent. How do I make it straight? - Maxon Today, we brought our tools and wood inside to continue our experience. We practiced hammering and taking nails out of the wood we cut on Monday. We also attached materials like corks to the wood as an expansion on our collage work. Reflecting on Monday's work in Morning Meeting We continued our work, realizing we could not rush the process. Children practiced being purposeful with their choices and following through with their work to complete their goals. Hammering, sawing and planning were not easy tasks. "Use the claw to get the nails out" - Maxon In the studio, Maxon chose to focus on hammering and pulling out nails. Jane and Sylvie worked together on a piece of wood they had cut the previous day. Sylvie and Jane's first attempt Sylvie and Maxon informed us that they were not done yet and planned to continue working this week. It's hard work but we love how rewarding it feels.
