"What is this? I can't cut it." - Cedar
A few weeks ago, while working on Lochie's birthday gift, Cedar discovered a piece of wire that had been removed from some ribbon that she was attempting to cut into smaller pieces.  This led to a brief introduction of wire, what it feels like, how it bends, and the special tool (wire cutters) that is required to cut it.  Cedar and Sylvie both found that placing the wire between the small teeth of the wire cutters required precision and concentration.

Sylvie and Cedar's discovery led us to a more formal introduction to the language of wire. We began by introducing the wire by color and material.  We had: a copper wire; a gold, brass wire; a black, steel wire; and two different sizes of silver, aluminum wire. We intentionally chose to explore the wire without tools or other added materials so that we could investigate the properties of the wire in a pure, minimally influenced manner.

Sylvie and the wire

"I pull it, twist it, and it goes." - Sylvie
From the moment Sylvie approached the wire, she began to gently manipulate it with ease and confidence.  She held it gingerly in one hand as she twisted the ends with the other.  She crossed the tips, brought them together (to form a circle), twisted the wire around her finger, created a mountain, and more.  When asked, "How did you change your wire?", Sylvie responded, "I pull it, twist it, and it goes." She experimented with each of the types of wire, and created many pieces for us to save.

Over the course of the two days, we observed a few consistent interactions among the children as they worked, and their direct interaction with the wire.

Many children began to bend the wire so that the tips were touching, and they had created a circle in a way that we had not anticipated.  Additionally, they attempted to stand their creations up on the tips of the wire (e.g. Sylvie created a loop and placed the tips on the carpet and proclaimed, "It's a mountain.").   As they twisted, turned, and wrapped the wire (around their fingers, animals, etc.), we could see a relationship developing between the children and the wire.

Working in close proximity offered a beautiful opportunity to observe and engage with the ideas and actions of the other children.  Their words, movements, reactions, and enthusiasm flowed among them.  (Contamination of knowledge)

Where to Sit: Collaging Snack Time Table Place Cards

Our month of Thanksgiving feast and table centerpieces, our continued explorations with collaging, and the approaching arrival of Lucia sparked the idea and subsequent work of making table place cards for snack time. We thought this would be a beautiful way to not only welcome Lucia but also give recognition that all the Brown Room children have finally arrived. We are finally a whole class (spare the different days). At last!
Day 1:  Sylvie, George, Lochie, C.C., Giacomo, and Maxon make their collages in the Atelier

(This was George's 1st day and his first time in the atelier. For the other children, the atelier is still a relatively new work space.)

Day 2: Audrey, Jane, and Marley make their collages
(In accordance with the Reggio Emilia pedagogy, the environment is valued as a third teacher, and so changing up the space can help to facilitate an experience. In order to accommodate the continuation of place card collages, we switched the message center with the blue table.)
Picture
Day 3:  Janie, Jack, and Cedar make their collages

(We missed Janie, Jack, and Cedar on the previous collaging days.)
Picture
Picture
Day 4: Lucia and Reed make their collages
(Lucia's  first day and Reed returning, after several days away, and finally, we got all of our snack time place card collages made so that we could use them at our special, we've all arrived, snack.)

Thanksgiving Feast - Centerpiece Prep

11/18/2019

What is Thanksgiving; and a feast? What is a centerpiece and where do we put it?  What does it mean to be thankful (or, what makes you happy?)? These are all questions we've been answering as we prepare for our school wide Thanksgiving Feast.  Inviting the children into the process of preparation for our feast is exciting and complex.  There are so many things that we are thinking about as we prepare.  Soon we will be chopping vegetables and making soup, but first we are working to create beautiful centerpieces that represent the languages that they know.

One of the first languages we chose to use was tempera paint.  The children have primarily used tempera at the easel and they had not yet mixed their own colors, so we wanted to offer a different experience/challenge.  With an added level of difficulty (holding the tube steady, adjusting brush strokes, etc.), the tubes also add 3D aesthetics to our centerpieces.  But, before we started painting, we had to create some new colors.
Picture
Picture
To introduce color mixing, we invited Maxon, Sylvie, and C.C. into the studio, and we had prepared a tray of empty jars, primary color paints (plus white), and small brushes.  We encouraged them to start by mixing two colors to see "what happened" or how the second color changed the first one.

On Monday, November 18th, we invited other children into the process of painting the tubes and squares for the tempera inspired centerpiece.

Embracing the Cold through the Gold of Ginkgo Leaves

"What's that smell?" -Marley
An annual autumn phenomenon occurs on several streets lined with Ginkgo Trees.

As the autumn season begins, the Ginkgoes become more noticeable as their berries ripen and their leaves begin transforming from green to gold. Then, almost all at once, and in tandem with a temperature drop, the leaves of the Ginkgo trees drop  in abundance.

One after the next, the Ginkgo leaves drift from the branches and lightly land upon the ground,  until the the sidewalk and street are filled with the chartreuse and golden leaves.

Today we got the pleasure of going outside to Potomac St. and embracing this natural phenomenon by playing in the autumn collage of brightly colored Ginkgo leaves.

Lochie's Birthday Celebration

Today, we celebrated Lochie's birthday with a special book that made everyone laugh.  His mom, Katherine, was a fantastic reader, and the children fed off of her joyful, fun energy as she read I am a Frog by Mo Willems.

Once we finished reading the book, some of Lochie's birthday committee (Giacomo, Cedar, Jane, Sylvie, and Audrey) was there to present his gift.  Lochie recalled sharing with them that his favorite animal is a giraffe.   With that idea in mind, his committee worked on a collage of materials that were inspired by the skin, hair, and overall appearance of a giraffe.  After we discussed the collage, Lochie walked around the candle three times to represent his three years, and then he excitedly blew it out, and everyone joined in to sing Happy Birthday.

HUG!

What a cheerful and love filled Friday! We were a cozy little Brown Room nest today with five children. We missed Cedar, Jack, Lucia (joining November 20th), Lochie, and Reed. We did have some additional friends join today too. Lily and Hugh,  from last year's Tucker Room, met us in the outdoor classroom in the morning.

After we got settled, we invited Hugh to bring out his family dog, Nora. Soon it got chilly so we returned to the classroom, only to go back out for a fire drill. "That bell in the hall is loud," said Giacomo. We had snack, watched some DACA protestors through the window, made clay decorations for beneath our photos, worked on Lochie's birthday gift, and ended with a dance party to the "oldies," but goodies.

I get by with a little help from my friends.

The level of empathy and compassion is so high in the Brown Room.  They are consistently willing to help, comfort, console, teach (scaffold) each other.  It is such a joy for us to watch their relationships flourishing.

C.C.'s birthday celebration

Our second birthday celebration is in the books, and we celebrated with a book that was special to our birthday girl, C.C.  We invite each family to share something special to them and their child, and C.C. chose to share one of her favorite books, "Room on the Broom".  C.C. brought her mom (Courtney), Dad (Matt), and sister (Emmie) to the classroom.

C.C.'s birthday committee (Marley, Audrey, Lochie, Cedar, and Giacomo) worked together to create a clay zebra, just as C.C. requested.  The result of their collaborative work is a beautiful black and white zebra with four legs (as specified by Giacomo), a tail with no stripes (as specified by Lochie), two eyes (Lochie), and some stripes (Audrey and Cedar).

C.C.'s big sister, Emmie, assisted her with opening the gift, walking around the candle, and blowing it out.  Thank you Courtney, Matt, and Emmie for coming to celebrate; it was a beautiful morning.

Alum Visits

Tommy, a most recent alum from last year's Tucker Room and his classmate and Jack's older sister Abby, visited us. Tommy read Sam and Dave Dig a Hole to us and Abby played with us outside.

It's like painting, but it's glazing...

We introduced glazing today, in part with preparing for C.C's birthday celebration tomorrow, and also just relative to our introductory progression of learning the language of clay. Those who glazed chose their colors, were reminded to use the brushes to apply the glaze, not paint, (it's similar but different), and we also introduced a wiping technique, which removes most of the glaze pigment from the surface of the clay but not from the grooves and cracks.
